Hi,
Can anyone offer any advice on buying a good whistle as a present. My wife, who for some years now has been a closet whistler, is coming up to the big 40 in a few months time.
She has already let it be known that a rather special whistle might be a good idea as a present (high D). Something in wood I think would be fine. Any suggestions bearing in mind that the birthday is five months away and we live in the Outer Hebrides?
You could probably get an Abell blackwood and silver whistle in about 3 months (http://www.abellflute.com), which I’m sure she’d appreciate.
One of Paul Busman’s (brewerpaul)new whistles might also be a nice choice, and if he’s still got some left shouldn’t take too long to get.(hometown.aol.com/brewerpaul/whistle.html)
Nearer to home for you is Jon Swayne in Glastonbury. He makes very fine whistles out of boxwood. Price is around £135. The way he normally sets them up they need fairly determined playing at the top end of the register, although he can adjust this for you. He may have whistles in stock. Contact me by email if you would like his email address.
How about one of BrewerPaul’s whistles? Not only are they fine whistles, she would be one of the first few to have one. (I’m not sure how the international thing would work, him being newly in business.)
I don’t think it will surprise anyone here to find that my recommendation would be for one of Fred Rose’s Blackwood whistles. I suppose you might get one within five months…drop Fred an e-mail and ask him - make no mistake, this is a great whistle. Fred’s e-mail address is fredrose.whistles@virgin.net
