Is this girl playing this tune, “The Yew Tree”, with the correct notation? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNzRIA6bN2w. Regardless of that, it still sounds very nice and I would like to follow along to learn it. I only ask as it appears to be a different (simplified perhaps?) notation to something in one of your own previous posts.
You’re referring to the post where MTGuru wrote the ABC notation from The Yew Tree?
This girl learnt it from a midi file, it says so in one of her videos. So it may be a slightly “different version”.
The notation MTGuru wrote is from The Battlefield Band recording, and only covers the piping part, which this girl does not play.
Rhadge is right. She’s playing only the melody / vocal line. The thing I transcribed was the piping break.
I’m glad the first part of the vid was for fingering demo only. Otherwise, I was expecting the whistle to go flying at any moment! Unless it was stuck to her thumbs with Gorilla Snot*.
*An actual product. A kind of tacky rosin paste that prevents picks and such from slipping from your fingers. Effective but nasty stuff.
Before mother of pearl was used on trumpet valve buttons it was common for players to put jam on their fingers to help with grip. It works but its a bit messy!
A very nice tune - thanks, I’ll add it to my list…
Is there an equivalent of WOAD for tune collectors? I think I have it.
I had a stab at the ABC for the tune. Getting the notes was fairly simple, if tedious process of stopping and starting the clip and watching the fingers. Getting the rythm I find more difficult. Placing the bar lines is a mystery to me.
For what its worth (probably not a lot) here is my attempt. I think the first four phrases are recognisable, the rest is, well, garbled:
X:1
T:The yew tree?
M:3/4
L:1/8
K:Em

If someone more skilled than I can improve on this I would be grateful…
Thanks for the help Rhadge and MT Guru. I was getting a little confused in my playing attempts between the ABC and the YouTube tutorial due to the differences. Now that that is sorted, a favour, or rather a secondment to the favour asked by DrPhill, Could someone post the ABC of the melody lines to this tune please? (Sorry DrPhill yours just didn’t convert.) Thanks once again to all for they’re respective help now, and for any further help as requested.
Oh dear, I dont know why. I just tried cutting and pasting into ABCExplorer (http://stalikez.info/abc/abcex.php) and it worked. There are some errors in it, but not enough to confuse ABCExplorer.
I did edit my post to update the ABC with my latest efforts, so maybe its worth another try.
