A "new" photo of Johnny Doran

1930s early - Johnny Doran (a travelling piper) with Jimmy Carrucan’s father in law, Jack Clair at St Bridget’s Well, Liscannor.

Looks like an Egan he has there. Kudos to Brad Moloney for pointing this out at thesession.org. This is from a bunch of photos from Australia, belonging to a emigrant family, the Carrucans, or relatives of theres, or something. Already found another snap with two 'tinas and a fiddle, might be more to be found, something like 500 photos at that site.

The pic is not exactly new, it was given to Eugene Lambe at least three/four years ago. I saw it when he showed it at a talk in Ennistymon at the time. It has also been published in the ‘Free Spirits’ book. It was taken at St Bridget’s Well, between Liscannor and the Cliffs of Moher.

Great to see another picture of Johnny. My understanding was he had access to various older pipes through Mealy and Brother Gildas.

Ah, “newish” then. You can view it full size at the website, too. Yes, the Dorans “dealt” in pipes when the chance arose, the Kenna set Ken McLeod now has was one they borrowed for a while, IIRC.

From Joe Burke’s website. Very dapper. The tassels off the drones - and regs? - and the ribbon on the neck of the bag are very sporting.

I have seen that one somewhere before. Nice pic. I seem to recall there was a similar studio portrait of Johnny in the NPU pic archive.

There’s another shot of a very young Felix that was printed in ITMA’s ‘The First Ten Years’
