3 piece whistles

Hi Everyone I am a reasonably new whistle player (I have a Clarke C and D and a Tony Dickson D and Low D) I love the more mellow sounds of the Tony Dickson but am finding problems with traveling and convenience (Taking on a 5km hike, backpacking in other countries…) and would like to get some kind of a two or three piece whistle.

Particularly with the Low whistle being more portable but I would also REALLY like a pocket size D if such a thing exists.

What do people recommend? Am I setting myself up for an inferior item or a very pricy one?

I know Tony does a three piece flute (with extra whistle head) for about £200 is this any good? Is there an option cheaper than this?

I have two old(non tuneable) Tony Dickson D’s that my wife and I play, they are perfectly in tune with each other so I must ask how important tune-ability is? (my ear is not good enough to judge if the tone changes with environmental factors and I dont oftern play with others)

The Parks Walkabout breaks down in to three pieces. Excellent whistle for the money.

There are others but I can’t remember them offhand. No doubt someone else will come along soon and let you know.

Carey Parks does a three piece (high) D whistle (Walkabout). I have one, and it is very portable. It fits in a shirt pocket just fine. Within my limited experience it seems a fine enough whistle. I rarely play another high D these days.

Tony Dixon’s three piece low D whistle is available as an entity in its own right IIRC [Edit: I just checked his catalogue and it appears that he does not… you could try talking to him about it] You do not need to buy a flute plus extra whistle head. It is certainly the most conveniently portable low whistle that I have come across. It is a perfectly serviceable whistle, with an easy and sweet top end. The lowest notes are a little on the quiet side. I can imagine it as a good travelling low D.

Welcome.

O’Bien’s Rover is a three piece. I believe that one of the materials availible is Derlin which should do great for camping.

Paul Busman makes a two piece Derlin whistle.

O’Brien and Busman whistle seem to get consistantly good reviews.

Claire’s two piece gets some mixed reviews, but its very affordable.

BTW, There is a used Parks Every Whistle listed in the Used Intrument Board at a very attractive price. This is the two piece whistle not the Walk About model.

I prefer my Claire two-piece to a Generation D, I find it marginally easier to control in and out of the second octave, but the sound is very similar - it’s nicely made and economically priced

WD Sweet’s Onyx low d is a three piece whistle. It is quite nice. Actually it is my desert island whistle - the one I would take with me if I could only have one whistle.
The only problem I have with it is I can’t put it down once I pick it up. It tends to make me late to whatever I have scheduled next. Simply a great whistle.

Tommy Dion has been making three part soprano and three part low D whistles for several years. Here are a few links.
