2004 Florida Tionol

Hello all and I hope that all is well. Some of you may be receiving duplicate copies of this email and for that I apologize. I am using a few different mailing
lists and want to make sure no one is missed. I will be sending one to the piping and ir trad lists as well, so dont get too pissed at yours truly… i will be short.

In general, here is the scoop. I have reluctantly been going at plans for the 2004 Tionol and have received confirmation finally from the last teacher that he
will be available, so here it is for 2004 as I have it now.

The 2004 Florida Tionol, sponsored by the Florida Uilleann Pipers (gracefully known as FUP (what a name huh?..FUP…sounds like an old Steve Martin joke))
will be the weekend of February 6-8th (so as not to coincide with west coast tionol). Whether it will be in Tampa or Orlando is still in negotiation, but will be
solidified in plenty of time for people to make travel arrangements.

In the interest of keeping some continuity while bringing in new folks, and following the model of other summer schools and tionols the line up this year will be
a bit different from last year… this is partially due to the fact that one of our florida piping friends was shall we say missing in action in Northern Ireland thanks
to our ever vigillant and increasingly difficult to deal with INS… so I asked Cillian if he could do it incase our own Eamonn Dillon was not allowed back in the
US. Ridiculous since he has a green card, AND is lovingly married to a wonderful American woman Erin. Write your congress people about this kind of
harrassment… I understand the motive, but not the execution.

Pipes:
Kieran O’Hare
Cillian Vallely (of Lunasa and famous Armagh piping family fame)

Flute and Whistle:
John Skelton (famous whistle player, flute player, bagpiper player)

Fiddle:
Liz Knowles (of Cherish the Ladies)

Like last year, there will be two performances, one on Friday night, one on Saturday night. Classes will be in the morning and afternoon on Saturday for all
instruments, and some classes on Sunday as well for those interested in more than one instrument, and/or private lessons with any of the teachers.

MacDinton’s Irish Pub has agreed to help sponsor our event in Tampa, but I still need to do some fund raising so we can afford it this year. Orlando is not out
of the picture, so I will let you know what becomes finalised. In any case, there are many activities for non-piping family members in either Tampa or Orlando,
as well as wonderfully attractive airports, downtown areas, etc.

The bonus about Tampa is.. there is beach!!! Plus, there is a discount hotel right down the street (short cab ride) from the pub, WITH a Catholic church
across the street for those feeling repentant come Sunday morning.

If there is strong opinion about having a reedmaking guru return this year as we had last year, we will certainly try to arrange it. Pat Sky was a great
reedmaking teacher last year, but I feel not enough folks took advantage of him to make the trip for him or someone like worth it at this point.. but he did play
wonderfully at the concert, and gave me a hell of a lesson enroute to airport (thanks again Pat).

So, at this point, if you could take two seconds to reply with a RSVP for the event as either 1)definitely coming down 2)interested and will try or 3) nope, not
interested and will not be coming down

Thank you to Kathleen and everyone who helped with last year, as well as John for hosting the spring gathering to discuss the Tionol. Lets get together as
proposed in November to discuss further. I will propose that those of us in Florida hosting the event may want to consider putting in an ante in addition to our
Tionol fee to help cover any costs equally, with whatever is left inthe end being returned, or spent on the next gathering.

Slainte,

john

PS please send word out to whomever you can regarding this event in Feb. Dervish will be performing near by, so there will be musical fun had by all.

Hello. As far as I know, I’m the third uilleann piper in Dade county. I’ve been playing an O’Grady half set for a year, whistle for five years, and highland pipes for six months. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make it to the tionol in 2004.
About that, I have a couple of comments. If you’re looking for another fiddler, Mr. James Kelly is here in Miami. I don’t know if he would be available, but I’ve heard him in person a few times, and he is great. Also, Mr. Kynch O’Kaine, a piper, is here.
The second thing is about reedmaking. If some basic tools and supplies were available at the tionol (for purchase), then I’d give it a try. Maybe this is already how you do things; I just thought I’d mention it.

Now the six month wait…

Ed

Edward, I see it’s your first post to C&F… WELCOME ABOARD!!
What part of Miami are you in?

Hi Tony, thanks for the welcome.

I live in the southern part of Miami. About ten years ago, this neighborhood incorporated into Pinecrest. It was at Pinecrest Gardens (formerly The Parrot Jungle) where I heard Mr. Kelly most recently. He was part of a program put on by the Folk Club of South Florida.

Have you been to any of the previous FL. pipers’ gatherings?

Ed

Ed, that puts Kynch midway between us. I’m in the North end of Miami.
I often travel through Fort Lauderdale on business, right past Eamonn Dillon’s neighborhood. Unfortunately, I haven’t had free time to stop in for a visit.

Not yet. I’d love to… It sounds like great fun!

I saw Eamonn and had a great visit on July 11th. He told me about his experience, Has he left again??? Hope not.

Timmy

I noticed that the tionol information has been updated on the Florida Uilleann Piper’s Resource Guide webpage. Gainesville will be hosting the event. It looks like I won’t be going, but I hope this trend of rotating the venue can continue. Miami 2005, unless there’s a Super Bowl in town.

Four months and counting…

Ed

This is an update for the 2004 Florida Tionol so you can start making
travel plans early, and let me know that you are coming. I am not
requesting checks or anything yet, but will later in the year so as to
know definitively who will be here and who wont.

The Tionol will be in Gainesville Florida this year the weekend of Feb
6-8th. The host of the tionol will be the Florida School of Massage,
whose generosity is becoming more and more important in irish trad
circles in central florida. Details for a big Saturday night concert
are being worked out, but we hope to have a large concert event open to
the public for $12 a ticket, but tionol attendees of course get in
free… more on that later.

Gainesville is within 1 1/2 hours or so from at least three major
cities, including Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville.. all with airports
cheaper than Gainesville’s airport costs to fly into… and all with
major family oriented attractions in case you have the ability to turn
this into a family vacation… Busch Gardens, Disney World, Universal
Studios, Sea World, Silver Springs, St. Augustine, lots of kayaking,
canoing, cave diving if you are brave and/or stupid, etc… plus we
have lots of gator on a stick to be had!

The cost will be $85 which includes performances, lessons on sat. and
sunday… Donations are also accepted to help fund the event as it gets
costly. There are several hotels within a mile or so of the School of
Massage, and about the same distance to downtown Gainesville, with lots
of restaurants and bars and stuff. The website will soon have that
information posted on it including the cost of accomodations for tionol
attendees at the various motels and hotels.

Please help spread the word so this year’s is even bigger than last
year. The teaching staff this year includes but may not be limited to:

Cillian Vallely - uilleann pipes
Kieran O’Hare - uilleann pipes
Liz Knowles - fiddle
John Skelton - flute and whistle
Albert Alfonso - Bodhran and spicy cooking

there may be more additions if the impending attendance warrants (hence
the need to hear if you are coming!)

As always, there are always unannounced guests that pop in for
performances, selling of wares, lessons. This year the first guest to
say he’s coming is whistlemaker Michael Burke. He will generously be
raffling off $100 towards one of his whistles. Thanks Michael!

So come on down to Gainesville, home of the gators, for perfect february
weather, with really reed-friendly humidity levels… dig yourself out
of the snow, bring the young-uns and better half, and spend some time
with us in sunny Florida. Remember, we are one hour from the beaches to
the west AND to the east…

and did I mention the massage school?
