xxx oxx question for susati C

my only whistle that produces a F natural xxx oxx clear and in tune is my susato D.

my question is: could do the same a susato C?
a Eb with the xxx oxx fingering?

xxx oxx cannot produce an F natural on any D whistle or flute. That fingering flattens the G almost to F# on the Susato I have. The baroque flute cross fingering for F natural, xxx xox (which flattens the F#) does produce a rather sharp F nat in both octaves - better than on some whistles, but scarcely satisfactory. I would imagine (I don’t have one to try) that the C whistle would work similarly with the same fingerings but obviously sounding a tone lower.

sorry. i have to be more precise:
my susato produces a perfect F natural in the second octave with xxx 0xx. not in the first.

i have an electrical tuner and a susato D. and the f nat is there.

but i have to record a tune and it must be played with a C whistle. (i have a gen, but the composer prefers susati) .
before buying it, i’ wonder if a susato C does the same trick to get a Eb((in the second octave))!

I’ll be doggone!

That works!

That one’s a keeper…

Yep, it works on a C Susato, too.

This only seems to work on the tunable models, though.

P.S. This also works on my Overton.

Thanks so much!!!

jajaj
i thought everybody knows it!

yes, the tunable ones and only susati high whistles. at my low D doesn’t works.

Yes, it works on both my Susato Kildare D and C. If you have several Susato head joints, you might try experimenting a bit, since they do vary.

The xxx oxx fingering is also very usable on my Burke, Overton and Sweetone Ds. It’s less stable on my Copeland D, but can be finessed. On my Gens and Feadógs, it tends to be unstable, sharp, and a bit harsh-sounding. And on some whistles, it doesn’t work at all.

Mmmmmm - interesting! I have an older tunable Susato D - the ones with the black head and cream body (don’t know model name - if they had one back then, about 12 years ago). As you say, I can get it to produce a 2nd 8ve f nat with xxx oxx, though I have to get the breath pressure just right or it pops to a slightly sharp Bb above! Interestingly, on my Gen it will really only produce a fairly in tune Bb, - I can just get it to give a very weak and wolfy F with very gentle blowing. On my Swayne it gives a slightly flat F# (easily), which may be to do with the conoid bore (on Baroque flute it is the fingering for Gb, slightly sharper than F#) and can also generate (less readily) a flat Bb/sharp A. Anyone for cross-fingered quarter tones? On my low whistle it just gives a fairly in tune but weak alternative F#, doesn’t want to know about anything else other than a flat top D.

you see…

Indeed! Live and learn, live and learn!
