Hey Boyd:
I’m not a UK boy but I do own a minidisc recorder, the Sharp MD-MT99 and it’s a great thing to have. Get yourself a Sony minidisc microphone and you’ll be pleasantly amazed by the quality of tone you’ll get from it. I’ve used it for live recording of bands and I’ve tried recording myself, and it’s a great system, and a great deal of fun. Except when I listen to myself, and then I wish there was a flattery setting. Sigh.
I’ve seen the newest of the Sony minidisc recorders and they’re excellent as well, but in no way cheap. The microphone is a little dear as well.
Anyway, I think I’ll stop now,
Mark

Thanks for that

Boyd,
if it just for recording, you might consider the following: Instead of an MD recorder, buy a good microphone and a little microphone pre-amplifier which also provides the phantom power for the microphone. And then, well, you’re all set. Just plug the mic to your PC and use the harddisk as the recording device. Then, all you need is a freeware sound editing software, e.g. SoundStudio, convert the incoming signal to any other data format.
Thanks.
I need something portable…to take to concerts or to house sessions etc

Laptop?
For Christmas I’m getting my first set of pipes. Have a David Daye set coming. My first foray into UPs. Whistle player for several, but had to learn these damned pipes. Wish me luck.
Timmy
Good luck and Happy Christmas.

My Xmas wish list…? That New Year’s Day will hurry up and come so that…well, so I can repeat my New Year’s resolution once again: To strive to stay sober next year so that “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” won’t sound so much like “The Bucks of Oranmore” (sorry Father, hope your sacred Christmas party went okay)
(I really should get myself a CD recording device)
BTW, did ya’ know that Christna Zesus was also born of a virgin (Mary), on Dec 25, and that a meteor shower also attended his birth…600 years before Christ? Wonder how that story got swiped? ![]()
(shrug) Merry Christmas anyway!
For Christmas? I hope to get my long-awaited Rogge set. I think I might have to wait a bit longer, though. sigh…
But it’ll be worth it.
I too have been wanting one of those mini-disc recorders. That might have to do it for this year.

I want a reed that will never fail, always be in tune, and one that never needs adjusting or tampering with.
Oh and it must last forever!
I will probably have to settle for the usual socks and underpants.
Socks produce a lovely muted tone, need next to no maintenance and are always in tune [with themselves at any rate]
Haven’t tried underpants …yet
B.
I don’t know Boyd, my socks have gotten pretty sharp on hot days. ![]()
Marc
Yea, I think I know what y’all mean. The larger the holes in the socks…the sharper. Kinda makes you feel like a heel though…esp on the gravel walks.
But, for a XXXmas gift, our discriminating piper might try killing two birds with one stone (socks and underpants all in one)…there’s a thin, stretchy material, well…I forget what it’s called, and I’m not sure it would be appropriate either in cold weather, but hey…it’s all about Christmas, and the package don’t have to be all that pretty. ![]()
I’ve been told my package is very nice…
oh wait, that’s something all together different. ![]()

xmas wish list ?
a present to all lovers of music and piping would be a master class video on the styles Johnny and Felix Doran et al.
Mikey Doran Snr, Johnny Rooney, Al Purcell and others that might not be known to me, could share their skill, approach and style with others if they didn’t mind. This could develop the theme of the three NPU teaching videos, encouraging musicians to express themselves in an individual manner. What else is music for? I feel the ‘classic’ style is alive and healthy in good hands. Those of us far from NPU headquarters can learn from the videos currently available. However I believe the NPU has provided teaching in the travelling style at Henrietta Street, what about the rest of us? On a wider scale it would be an invaluable contribution to the record of our musical heritage.
I suggested this to Terry Moylan in a recent phone call to the NPU, he agreed it was a good idea. I know there are many who appreciate the contribution to the musical world that musicians who play in the travelling style have made. If you are of the same mind make yourselves known and heard to the NPU and the other relevant bodies.
I look forward to my Christmas stocking 2003,
Yours unregulated
i dont think john rooney or mickey doran would sit for a video camera,as great as they are, they get a little nervous playing on a stage.as for a video, jhon plays diffrent everytime and is the best ive seen on the regulators.he seems to play regulators ,like every body else plays the chanter.if you want to see them play,go to glendalough in feb22 to 24 and they play there night and day the hole weekend.and the next one felix is thirty years dead.so do not miss it!
