Would I want a Mellow D if I get...

I think I may be ordering a few more cheapies soon, and I’m trying to decide what I want to get. Here’s my list:

  1. Oak D
  2. Walton’s Irish Whistle C
  3. Generation Bb
  4. Walton’s Mellow D

I’m not sure about the Mellow D.

I currently have a Sweetone and a Feadog.

My reasoning.

  1. I’ve read good things about the Oak and like the sound clips I’ve heard.
  2. I currently don’t have a C.
  3. I’ve heard decent things about the Gen Bb, and like the idea of something lower than the C.
  4. I’ve heard positive comments about the Mellow D. but I’m not sure the sound clips make it pop out as something I need.

Should I bother with the Mellow D? I know it’s only $6, but if I’ll seldom play it, it’s wasted money. I’m currently looking for something with a more clean, sweet tone that’s preferably a little on the quieter side.

I was also considering a one-piece Clare.

I don’t have any experience with an Oak, but I have owned two Walton’s–a brass D and a little black aluminum in D. Both were pretty sad–because if the buzz.
I think you already have the best cheapie–your Sweetone.

Walton C is my favorite cheap C
Mellow D another favorite [and having tried most cheapies in the wind I have to say this and the Walton C are clear winners in my travels]
Gen Bb is great, sometimes needs the blue tack tweak.

I recently orderd a Sweetone i C, and I was dissapointed. It´s a diffrent instrument compared to the Sweetone D-whistle. Suprisingly it´s not in tune. (I used both ear and an electonic device) Some notes are very far off and the OXXOOO grip doesn´t work at all! The sound is however very similar to the D-whistle. If Clarke could correct these deficiencies it would be a perfect companion to the finest cheap whistle - the Sweetone D.

Personally I’m unimpressed with the Mellow D. I like the regular walton’s Irish whistle better. But I always recommend everyone get a Clare 2-pc, if for no other reason than its sheer usefulness. I happen to like how it plays, as well.

Forget the Mellow D, unless you want to try your hand at tweaking a cheap whistle.

I’ve had a three Mello-D’s and liked them all (two brass and one nickel). I preferred the brass over the nickel.

They take a bit more air than their thinner bodied cousins, but they do sound more mellow.

I’ve also had a few Oak whistles I liked quite a bit. They are not as loud as other cheap whistles, but have a nice 2nd octave.

Why not get a Jerry Freeman Mellow dog? You are much surer of getting a whistle that you will cherish.

The Mello-D isn’t too bad.
I’ve heard people rave over Jerry Freeman’s tweaked, but have never had the opportunity to try one.
My own recommendation would be to get the Mello-D and the Generation C. Then have Mack Hoover make you a Black Top head that will fit the both of them. One head, two whistles.
You’ll have two top notch whistles for a small investment.
The Oak D with a Black Top is excellent as well. As is the Clare. But that top won’t fit the Gen C.
Without the Black Top in the equation, go with the Clare. Very impressive second octave. You may need to clean out the inside of the head for stray peices of plastic though.
