Wooff full set for sale on NPU's site

There’s a Wooff full set in D for sale on NPU’s site. I assume a narrow bore set, but maybe a wide bore? Posted 4 days ago on the 13th. Is in Ireland it seems. Prehaps of interest, and maybe cheaper than the Froment on e-bay?

Not much of a description… “Full set, key of D, by Geoff Wooff”

Since it’s a private sale (and not eBay) there’s no way to monitor what offers the seller is receiving on this set.

I spoke with the seller. The set was made 10 years ago, but hasn’t been played much lately as the seller has back problems and cannot play them any longer. It is ebony with brass keys, keyed chanter and I believe boxwood mounts. Unfortunitly for us here in the states, the exchange rates would make this extremely costly as I believe the seller wants at least 10 to 12,000 euros. The people at NPU have told them of a Woof set selling for 25K (I told the seller that that set was a special anniversary set and not apples to apples), but in any event they have set their expectations high.

Made 10 years ago, around 1994. I wonder if it is a wide or narrow bore. Do you remember this set Peter? Interesting that it comes up for sale at the same time as the Froment on e-bay - hmm, which to chose, if you’re in the market for a top layer full D set that is? The Wooff would be more unique of course, especially if it’s a wide bore D.

The seller does not have a computer and had no knowledge of the Froment set on ebay until I mentioned it. Purely coincidental.

Geoff would never in a million years make a wide bore set. The set is definitely narrow bore. Did the seller mention materials to you when you spoke to him?

Patrick.

Indeed they are narrow bore and I agree that Mr. Woof has not been making sets in widebore D from what I am told. As I mentioned above the keys are brass, the caps/mounts are boxwood. The drones are straight rather than wrap around. The chanter/drones/regs and stock are ebony.

Hmm… so it would have been made around the time Mikie Smyth’s C# set was made. Geoff was doing some great things at that time.

PD.

Geoff is renowned for the flat sets and his D sets are not the same as his flat sets…that’s a fact and Geoff would agree himself…Mikie Smyth has a D narrow bore also, ask him his opinion on the matter.

It’s not wide bore though

PD.

As a matter of interest then, which would you lot prefere if you had the cash - a narrow bore Wooff set in D, or a wide bore Froment in D. I like Geoff’s instruments, but if I want to play in D then for practical purposes, sessions, playing with flutes and fiddles etc. I’d choose a wide bore D

And to confuse matters further I’m greatly enjoying the new ‘medium bore’ (I suppose that’s the best working description) D chanter design that I got off Joe Kennedy recently. It’s a live one! Brilliant response, and works perfectly well for me in a session setting.

The set advertised is definately narrow bore and has characteristics that are profoundly different from your standard D set on the street. You’d want to be quite aware of what you were getting there IMO.

Regards,

Harry.
