I guess I 'm missing the feel of wood. I sold my blackwood flute to buy pipes, and now have a $100 left over for a sporano d whistle. How are wooden whistles? Sweeter, louder? I guess I would be looking for sweet sounding, but loud enough to play in my local session. Any advice would be much appreciated. Brian (eedbjp)
Save some more money.
How much more?
Wooden whistles have a nice warm feeling to them. They get real warm near a fire, so you’d want to avoid that. Anywho, David O’Brien has introduced a [limited-supplied) wooden whistle that’s going for around $100 CAN (maybe around $90 USD). Erle Bartlett (Maker of Syns and Black Diamond whistles) has a lancewood Syn (review here) that he occasionally makes. He may have some, or may even make one. I think they’re around $100 as well. Or, you could get one of those whistles made in the middle east that you for around 5 bucks. I got mine for .54 cents on the dot, and after extensive tweaking, its a fairly nice whistle.
Sweetheart’s are also nice.
Sent you a PM to further wooden words.
The only Whsitles that are in your price range are the new O’Brien Maple which is apparnetly a sweet and quiet Whsitle and is probably just what you are looking for, also in that price range is a Syn Lancewood which is supposed to be medium volume and more mellow than their aluminum cousins. You could save about $30 more and could buy a Sweetheart, a little on the louder side but they are sweet sounding, in this price range is also a Weston which I have heard is really sweet and quiet. About $100-$150 more you have a couple choices Busmans tell Paul what you are looking for and he will make it, Bleazeys very loud, and more on the rough side but that depends on the wood, and Greenwoods which are supposed to be sweet yet have a presence at the same time. Now if you save $200+ you have a lot of choices Abells which are very sweet toned Whsitles yet have they have volume, Rose which is similar to the Greenwood only a bit quieter and sweeter (I think), and Lon Dubhs I have heard these are sweet quiet Whistles that are not only a Whistle but a work of art. That is what comes to mind, out of those I have played Sweets, Busmans, Bleazeys, Syns (but only the metal ones), O’Briens (also the metal ones), and Abells out of those my favorite was the Abell it felt the best I would say the only Whsitle I have ever played in this caliber besides it is my Sindt C hands down the two best Whsitles I have ever played. It is a long list if you don’t want to spend more than you have I would definanatly reccomend either in your price range as their metal cousins were very nice and I think the O’Brien is what you are looking for.
I haven’t heard a lot about the Weston. I checked out his site and that sure is a beautiful instrument. The case and Irish coin don’t hurt either. I did a search on this forum and there is only one member who talks about the Weston. Any more info on it?
There’s also the Reyburn high D for $110, which has a wood (or Delrin) fipple with a brass body.
I’d say, scrape together another $35 and get the Sweetheart Professional.
Agreed. I have several wooden Ds but the standout is the Busman which was also the cheapest. My Abell and Thin Weasel are also very fine whistles but more expensive. (I haven’t checked Paul’s latest prices but I think they would still be a bargain.) You might also want to consider Greenwood.
In that price range, I’d be inclined to go for a Sindt, Humphrey or Burke depending on taste. My Sindt and Burke are both to my taste, the Sindt especailly and my first Humphrey is currently on order but people with similar tastes to me are very enthusiastic so I’m very excited about it.
I really feel bad because I have a Weston wooden whistle in D to review and I can’t seem to get to it. In sort, I like it and it’s certainly a good whistle for the money.

My Sindt is one of my favorite Whistles. In fact after I got my Sindt I traded my Bleazey whistle back to Phil for a Flute of his.
I’m about to wet myself waiting for my Weston.
Then “riverman” is quite fitting.
What’s the web address for Weston Whistles?
I’d consider the Sweetheart in blackwood with silver ring on this post:

Here’s what it should look like:

It may not be what you want, but worth looking into for the price. If it plays anything like the Sweetheart Pro, it’s a deal, unless the cork thing is a problem. But for $50, you could ask Ralph Sweet what he’d charge to get it proper for you. You may still stay under $100.
I’d go fer it myself if I didn’t already have enough wood whistles.
I went for the O’brien maple. I’ll let you know how it works out. Brian (eedbjp)
I would really like to hear more about that Whistle. Tell us about it when it arrives.
Nice to see that my work is getting some airing on this great forum!
C’mon Dale, get goin’ your review is needed, not just by me either!
Whilst this might be considered a Commercial Post by some of our more puritanical contributors, I prefer to regard it as a natural response to legitimate enquiries. Thats my story anyway. If you feel you might be offended, don’t go any further!
For those of you who may be interested, I make wooden and copper whistles to order. My wooden ones generally use naturally gleaned english fruit wood, usually cherry as I have found that this gives the nicest tone. I have used Yew, and Sapele (not a naturally occuring english wood I have to add but it has came from a 200 yr old beam recovered from a barn demolition), as well as pear and Hawthorn. I have always been one to fly in the face of convention so I try to make instruments out of woods that might be considered ‘unusual’. I have some Sycamore that is drying out at the moment and a fantasstic piece of olivewood that is awaiting my attention.
My whistles are all hand made (is there any other way) and no two are ever alike. I can accommodate personal requirements for volume and hole size/placement within reason.
The whistles are trimmed with brass and all have either a contrasting or matching wooden fipple plug. The wood is sealed both inside and out with a resin-based coating to help with the moisture problems associated with wooden whistles but still manage to retain the beautiful feel and appearance of natural wood.
Please feel free to visit the website, www.westonwhistles.co.uk or PM me for more info. I can send out clips and pics if needed.
Oh and by the way, I sell them at $95.00 Another $30 if you want the presentation box.
