I’m new to the whistle and this forum. I love it’s sound and it’s more than apparent versitility.
I recently began collecting a few whistles because I didn’t find any 2 the same. At some point I could see myself trying to make some. I found this forum as I did more research…
Forgive this new guy asking this question, but I didn’t find a simple response (yet) in a search for the answer to this question:
Eleven months a member, 951 posts and you never once thought to find out what WhOA meant? Tsk, tsk, tsk. And you thought WE were “normal”?
The good news, of course, is than many psychiatric disorders can now be treated on an outpatient basis - which is perhaps WHY we’re all still loose and roaming the Internet.
Sounds to me like a mere Obsessive Disorder is the least of your mental issues. I’d have a serious talk with Dr. Dale - Stat!
Meanwhile, take twelve pints of Guinness and call back when your head clears.
Thanks…I think. Maybe I’m a willing sufferer already
Would anyone have a suggestion on which site to visit, or book to read, to learn about the construction, tweaking, and playing of these wonderful instruments? I have some music background, can read music, and have good ears…but lots to learn. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Ya mean it ain’t a fancy way of saying . . .totally disorganized?
That’s what I figured it meant after seeing his photos of his whistle stash. Come to think of it, it also describes my office. I tell you, it’s downright embarrassing when you can’t find that elephant you put down just a minute ago!
Welcome, Eamonn! Yes, WhOA. Well, it only gets worse. For many of us, the whistle is a gateway instrument. Being that you’re already thinking on making them I’d say you’re well on your way! Welcome to the insanity!
I kinda knew that I was gonna to suckered into doing this. From some of the posts that I’ve seen, there’s many that have walked before me, and there’s going to be many to come.
Now, if I could only make my hands just a bit bigger to play a low D
I visited with David O’Brien this afternoon and picked up a few whistles (D/C/B-) with different fipples. I really wasn’t happy with the store bought pipes I bought- hopefully the O’Brien pipes will be a good experience. So far I like what I hear… David is an accomplished musician. Aside from the MP3 files I’ve tracked down and listened to, he’s the first person I’ve heard live. I’m looking forward to getting some good CDs to listen to- there’s lots of stuff I never considered (all the pops and rolls that fill out the rythym)
Post structural? I guess that’s the experience I have after I butcher a perfectly good piece of tubing
At the SF Fest last night it was suggested that I get Chieftain’s albums 1 through 9.
Talk about WhOA, you should have seen the spred of whistle, flutes, pipes and other intruments of mass destruction available for observation and play. I never thought it would take 22 musicians to put a display together that would rival JessieK’s!!!
I’m coming to believe that Jessie really is equiped with multiple arms and mouths, like the representations of some of the Indian deities - how else could she deal with them all?
I also suspect she never sleeps - but that’s a much more common consequence of a new baby
