They used to be real big around here, in the infancy days of the Renaissance Fair. I knew some people in it, but that was in 1976. I haven’t heard a peep of late… About four years ago, I was mountain-biking in Tilden and ran across some people practicing swordplay in armor and such.. I guess it was them…
I was in the SCA 19 years ago 
It was my ticket to working renaissance faires, since i had no musical talent at the time, and not a lot of money to spend on faire tickets.
Back when i was in, very few people had money. Of course, costuming, etc, all add up if you want to really “get into it”..but fighter practice and stuff was pretty much free sharing of knowledge
I would think that if you looked up local Renn Fairs you could probably find some contacts for your nearest chapter.

The SCA seems to be less about cash and more about time.

I’ve known quite a few people in it.
You get some who are actively interested in history and research and then you get others that are quite mad.
I worked ren-faires for years and it was usually the these sorts of people who couldn’t leave the the costumes and play acting after the gates closed for the day.
I heard from a number of them over the years that they felt they were these “characters” in past lives… well that may be possible but I’d like to know why they are always some sort of nobility and never the village sh*t shoveler or something.
I think it kind of like being a Medieval Furry.
Maybe you’d be better at LARPing.

That actually is really cool for me.
Anyway, still any suggestion about things, I know where to go, I have contacts but I need more of personal experience and perhaps present day info.

If I had remained in Boise I probably would have joined. I actually found someone who I could take swordfighting lessons from, and I wasn’t TOO bad at it. 
My sparring partner and I once gave a demo of swordfighting at a Boise C&F gathering.
I really do not know how useful that would be. Each region has a different feel and specialty.
The Barony of Jararvellir (Madison) has a very active Armor guild and has a different feel to it than Nordskogen (St Paul/Mpls) which seems to know more about fiber arts like nalebinding and sewing (mead production was also well represented). Even within Baronies, it seems that there can be smaller sub divisions that have distinct personalities.
Meetings were free to attend up here, so it would be best to just go to a couple of those and get a feel for the group.
My father is a historical reenactor and was never very fond of the “SCAdians”. Mainly, he felt that they were more interested in dressing up and play fighting rather than teaching the public something of value.
But this is probably based on his personal experiences and not representative of the entire group.
Come, now. What’s not historically edifying about push-up bras?
