After an unexpected bodhran purchase last weekend at Tionol, I decided it would be a good opportunity to offer some of the whistles I don’t really use up for sale. I have the following available:
Burke Aluminum AlPro EZ Low D – $180
Sindt A – $75 SOLD
Sindt D – $60 SOLD
Silkstone C – $100
Burke Brass Bflat (used maybe twice) $115
Ralph Sweet Blackwood D – $60 SOLD
Please send along a PM if you are interested in any of these. Also, please let me know if you know for a fact that I have any of these priced too high.
It might be helpful if you let everyone know if the Silkstone is the pvc or alloy. I have the C in pvc (british racing green) and despite the green color (which I now like) it is a great sounding whistle. The smooth holes allow for great fingering as well.
I remember seeing a Sweetheart in African Blackwood at The Whistle Shop . . . http://www.thewhistleshop.com/catalog/whistles/highend/Sweetheart/blackwood/blackwoo.htm
but the pic was for reference only, since they were discontinued. I have always thought those were “sweet” looking whistles, especially compared to the laminates they make now. What threw me was the price you sold it for. Seemed low to me. I hope the new owner enjoys it!
Yes, that is the whistle. Pretty huh? However, I must add that I found mine had acquired a chip in the underside of the fipple in the lighter-toned wood since I played it last. Cat must have knocked it off the shelf, is my guess. It is not a crack, but a small chip which I’m guessing can be fairly easily repaired by someone who knows how to work with wood. (I notified the buyer as soon as I discovered it.)
I took a guess at the price, and realized afterward that it’s probably way low, but what the heck. That whistle has sat on my shelf for probably 6 years. If someone will play and love it, I figure it’s all good. Perhaps I’ll get a great price on a whistle I buy some day. ;>
I was at the Sweetheart factory yesterday and was told that the African Blackwood whistle will be available in the next couple of months. Not sure if they meant the Pro model or the older model, but shoot them an email to see.
Thanks Mike, I will. I did ask them about it in an email a few months back, and was told they stopped making them because of inconsistent supply or something like that. It seemed odd at the time, only because it seems like there are other whistle and flutemakers that offer African Blackwood.
I just got an email from Ralph about the African Blackwood. Here it is what he said.
We will be making a new batch of the Dymondwood whistles within a month or so, and we have already drilled and rough-turned a batch of 40 blackwood whistles to be turned at the same time; the pieces are now in the drying oven (low temp) so they will be ready for reaming and turning when the dymondwood pieces are ready for the same thing. As in the past, these blackwood whistles are exactly the same design as the Dymnondwood ones, and have the same playing characteristics.
These will NOT have the silver rings, though. I hope that I can do that in the future, but not right now because of design complications I can’t quite explain! Also, we’re trying to get our new low D whistle into production.
What a guy! Superfast response, and it’s good to know the blackwoods will be available in the not-tooo-distant-future.
