Whistle tweek talk #1/4 extra fun for gen F owners

Anyone with a Generation F(Nickel or brass) and a Susato Kildare head(not the new VSB) can do this. The only modification required is removal of the Gen fipple. The outside diameter of the Gen body almost perfectly matches the inside diameter of the Susato head or, to put it another way, both heads share the same size inner bore dimension.Simply connect the susato head to the Generation and Bob,s yer uncle!A single, or partial wrap of cellotape at the top of the barrel may be needed for a more precise fit.Check with a tuner for the correct bell note positioning and you may,as I do, prefer this to a normal F Gen set up.Have fun kids! :smile:Mike

Hey, Mike, I don’t own either of those, but I love the title of the thread! Very, very good, mate! Get to Clarke tweeks and I’ll jump in!
Cheers,
Bill Whedon

Mike, what does this get you? Can you describe the sound difference? Or playability?

Works great Mike… and it makes me wonder.
What if you cut off the flare on the Susato mouthpiece (where the Susato body normally connects) so it wouldn’t look so unsightly on a Generation body?
But let’s not stop there… go ahead and increase the inner bore diameter to 13mm (being careful to stop short of the blade) so it would accept a standard Eb or D tube.
And since we’re already tweaking it quite heavily, why not cut a more comfortable radius where your bottom lip rests… Susato mouthpieces are just so damned chunky.
I know you’re a serious tweaker Mike, so why not sacrifice a Susato mouthpiece to this idea and see how well it works… or doesn’t work, as the case may be.

Tyghress, best thing to do is try it if you have the whistles. The sound is realy quite unique…loud, focused no squeeks and generaly a lot of fun.The tone holes on mine are tuned but I think if you are happy with Gen intonation you,ll be satisfied…it,s really OK,trust me.If you have a susato set, this is a nice addition to the family. Mike

Good Susato heads are as rare as hens teeth so unless its a dog I,d leave it as it is, for use on a susato. The fipple plug is hollow so shaping is realy not an option unfortunately. Mike

I figured my F Gen tweek would be good for about a quarter of a thread so please jump in with your Clarkes tweek…the water,s fine. Mike

Are you all saying that you can get your fingers on all the holes of a Gen F at the same time, to get a bell note? I can’t imagine that. I’m only 5’9", 200 lbs, but my fingers won’t all fit on it at the same time, so I gave mine away.

Some of us are even lucky enough to be able to play it with a piper grip!

I call this the “Don’t Do This Tweek” tweek.
As I have noted before, the blade on a Clarke is more like a dent in the tube than anything else. With that in mind, I took my specially-made “Tweeking pliers”, and flattened the thing and pushed it down to look more like a “conventional” blade.

Two hours later, I finally got the damn thing back to the original (pretty close) “dent” shape, and it worked again.

Sometimes, “Don’t Try This At Home!” means just that… :astonished:

I just did what you suggested and must say it works fine, sounds much clearer than before with the original fipple. Only it looks odd, but no problem with that.
It’s really a “should try” if you got the parts at home.
Cheers Mike.
