I know some of you have looked around for some device to support a low whistle. I came across this today. Doesn’t look like it would be too hard to make something similar with an o-ring and some kind of cord.

Except … Keep in mind this strap is not intended to support the instrument while playing. It’s just a “Don’t lose your recorder” strap for young schoolkids who are prone to … losing their recorders.
The instrument hangs at chest-level when not in use, and the cord hangs loosely when the instrument is in playing position.
Hence the non-adjustable strap and ultra-thin cord. For playing support you’d want to make the strap adjustable, and the cord much thicker (or padded) around the neck to avoid accidental guillotining. Also, the scratchy metal ring would have to go.
Come to think of it, would a supporting neck strap attached that high even work without hitting your chin, or straddling both sides of your chin? Will have to try this and see.
Strap-wise, a bottom-supported thumb strap or a saxophone neck strap avoids these problems, and is pretty ergonomic. Like my thingy: https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/mtguru-low-d-thumb-strap/53255/1
Agreed on all points. I was just throwing it up there as a starting point for anyone looking to devise something for their own use. I do like the o-ring idea though as it can easily be moved around on the whistle to a spot that works for the player (although a conical whistle would present a problem with that).
Now we all know why you don’t like that o-ring thingy… you don’t want the competition as you’re getting ready to launch your “You Should Have Seen the Size of the Whistle That Got Away!” whistle fishing gizmo! ![]()
I keep waiting for a call from Ron Popeil, or maybe Vince the Shamwow guy. “It’s a whistle strap! It’s a fishing line! You’re gonna love my nuts!” No such luck yet.
How did your nuts work their way into this thread?
My nephew has a mouse in his house that is first and gets the cheese - exceptionally talented mouse - also pops up and watches TV with him. My mom tells him he should just consider the mouse a pet and stop trying to catch the mouse!
nuts → mice → ?? … maybe early bird specials?
sadly, he actually says that in the commercial
I’m pissin’ myself. That’s funny as hell!
I’ve not seen that before.
Just adding … I can think of situations where a whistle hanger strap could actually be handy. Such as performing a tune set that calls for quick key changes between a D and C whistle, which is not uncommon.
Shades of Roland Kirk, with his tenor, stritch, manzello, and other stuff all hanging from his neck.

Including his whistle.
That got me to thinking: anyone still have the link to the video of that bagpipe made from an entire cow skin? As I recall it had two chanters. Can’t imagine why I thought of that just now.
Animal hide … 2 chanters … isn’t it obvious? →
