Hi everyone I’m pretty new here and this is my first post! I hope it’s not too stupid of a question
Today my favorite cheapie Feadog whistle broke
The body is fine but the mouthpiece broke completely. I was wondering if it’s possible to maybe drill a hole and make it into a fife? Has anyone ever tried to do this?
Your second post, actually. But welcome again! ![]()
Not a stupid question, just not very practical. There are convertible whistle/fifes on the market. But you can’t just drill a hole. You’d need to construct a fife mouthpiece to extend the top of the tube to the proper length for the embouchure hole, cut the hole to the right size and shape, and plug the end at the right position.
If you’re the tinkering type you could read up on flute acoustics and certainly try. Most people would think it not worth it, compared to simply replacing the broken whistle and purchasing a decent fife.
Don’t discard the tube in any case. Mixing and matching 1/2 inch tubes and heads to make Frankenwhistles is one of the joys of whistling. And a Gen, Clare, Waltons etc. head on a Feadóg tube can be an interesting combination.
Or just start from scratch with a length of copper plumbing pipe…
Yeah I figured there was more to it haha. Thanks for the clarification! I think I’ll just hold on to the tube and see what I can use it for later. Luckily I have a new Dixon coming in next week that I’m pretty excited for since it’s my first step above the “cheapie” whistles. ![]()
As for building one from scratch I think I’ll hold off with that until I have some time and some tools on my hands ![]()
You can make one from plastic pipe with just a hacksaw and a pair of scissors…
