Whistle identification - yellow whistle with a logo of a boy playing a whistle

Hi there

I am trying to identify this whistle that I picked up on Ebay. The seller described it as a Pan whistle. I can’t find any reference to this whistle anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

I have a green one. At the foot end it says ‘foreign made’ AFAIK these were made in Germany during the 1930s.

Thank you Mr.Gumby - that is realy helpful. When I asked AI it started telling me about some Pan Educational company in England producing these for schools in the 1950’s but I was unable to find anything to back up that claim so assumed AI was dreaming.

Anyway it is a bit different so nice one to add to my every growing collection.

There is a history of making this type of metal whistles in Germany. The Calura was initially made there but there were several others. I have even seen images of whistles with swastikas, apparently they were played in the Hitler jugend. That would place them firmly in the 1930s. I don’t know if this type of whistles were still produced post WW2, possibly : tin toys etc were popular during the 1950s. The Caluras still carried on for a bit, I think, after moving production to the US.
The designation ‘foreign’ on mine indicates it was made for export to the UK.

Trying these old second hand whistles makes me appreciate my newer whistles all the more. Out of 10 whistles I picked up on eBay only 1 is vaguely playable tho I am not going to try the ones with the lead fipples.

Thanks Mr Gumby for the additional info. Really interesting. My yellow one doesn’t have any writing on it.
