You old pros at C&F have probably got many ideas about suitable whistles holders, but here’s mine anyway.
I use Teletubes (not to be confused with Teletubbies!) - mine are made by Jakar - they are telescopic plastic tubes with carrying straps that come in a range of sizes. I have one that is about 17" long fully collapsed and carries my tenor and soprano whistles (G,A,C & D) plus cleaning cloth and joint lubricant. My other tube is from 28" and holds my Low C & D whistles in their soft cases plus cleaning cloths. They are tough, easy to carry over your shoulder and cheap - £3.50 each size. I bought mine from an artists shop.
Hi all. I’m new to the forum and to the art of tinwhistle.
I bought a Clarke D whistle a couple of weeks ago and decided it needed a home, besides my desk drawer, so I decided to make a box.
I think it came out pretty good.

I made the box out of bass wood because it would be easy to cut with an X-acto blade. I then used Mod Podge to glue fabric to the outside and simple rolled some more fabric for the inside padding/liner.
The pictures aren’t very good, but you get the idea.
I’m thinking that if I ever get the extra cash, I may go and buy a scroll saw and make one out of cherry.
Ah the naivety of a noob whistler. Don’t get me wrong, I think your box is great, a good idea well executed,
but, you’ve forgotten to allow for Whoad
. A crippling disorder that inflicts all whistling kind at one time or another. As you succumb to the uncontrollable urge to buy whistles in every key, made of brass, wood, plastic aluminium etc you will need carry cases that hold slightly more than a Clarke original. ![]()
PS Welcome to C&F
The box looks excellent. How was it that you chose bass wood(a premiere carving wood)?
I use a snooker cue case, the type where the cue screws in half, its just right for a low D and i’ve got two high d’s in as well and i could get another low D in when i’ve got the brass to buy one. You can pick em up brand new very cheaply if you look around.
You mean this didn’t explain the choice? …
I would have liked to use pine, or even a hardwood, but I don’t have any method to cut it accurately. My dad got rid of our scroll saw a few years ago, so I was left with my X-ACTO kit. So I needed something that could be cut fairly easily with my blades.
Well, if that should come up, then I’ll just make a box large enough that I can hold them all. Perhaps something in the style of a cigar box with removable layers/trays.
Hm…that sounds like a fun project, actually.
I was going to say that Black Mage sounds like just the type to make an astounding box for any number of whistles if this is his/her first box. Very nice indeed. Welcome to the forum!
Hmmmmm - sounds like we could even have another potential whistle maker on our hands?
I wouldn’t be surprised. Oh, I am going to look in an art store and see if I can find those tubes. They sound like quite a good idea for us non-wood workers.
Same as me…I got a nice loking silver one for £5.00…looks very sleek ![]()
Making whistles, eh? Hm…I am intrigued. The inner machinations of my mind are churning.
Of what kind of tubes does thou speak?
Oh, and I’m a guy.
Yes I read the part about Black Mage useing a X toblade to cut the bass wood and covering it with cloth. I hope you do not think I was contesting the choice of wood. Maybe I should have just came out and asked if Black Mage is a wood carver and we could exchange carving tips.
Then I would have been off the thread. Any way, using material that suits the tools at hand is very resourful. Great looking whistle box Black Mage.
Guess I will just go back out to the garage and wait for my next correction here. Take it easy on me though. After all I am a fellow whistler.

Black Mage, guy,
I was talking about the plastic tubes that perrins57 mentioned in the first post. They sounded like a simple solution and a bit nicer than my cardboard wrapping paper roll, although not as nice as your custom made box. Actually, I worked a bit in book conservation and got training in making boxes from binder’s board, so I might make something nice sometime----it’s just that my workroom is such a disaster I cannot even get in it at the moment!
Tommy, I think maybe we don’t understand about wood carving (I can hear you snorting)—I like when anything gets brought up. I didn’t think you were being critical. You can give wood carving tips any old time. ![]()
If it sounded like I was snorting please take it as a humors snort. ![]()
OT First wood carving tip-use basswood and a sharp knife. The OT is for off thread. It took me some time to find that out and a few others BTW.

i may be elitist but i like to be able to slip that whistle into the smallest space in my backpack or briefcase and get it out in a hurry to play when waiting to pick up kids of whatever, and taking it out of a case just slows me down, and the case just takes up space. true, it protects the whistle, but don’t you like that “ell-played” look?
shutting up.
