Which whistle... (yeah, yeah, I know, another one, humor me)

I just wish to ask those who’ve played Waltons what low end whistles have a distinct sound from them… My mellow D has been a regular cart-horse lately and I guess I want something less sluggish… I’m sure there’s term for it that I don’t know, but there you are.

And all those in SoCal such as Gary, the man with 2 Feadogs, where would one go to buy whistles here? Sure, I can order, but I like the idea of getting to check them out a bit. I live in the north Orange County area.

Sorry, to clarify, I mean low end high D whistles.

Say, was I supposed to introduce myself at some point? I’m slow on cyber-ettiquette, heck, I’m barely housebroken in the real world. Well, here I am. Abandon hope, all ye who mentor.

hiz Dew,

i have 2 Waltons only in my posession. one is the D Black Guiness aluminum and the other a Mellow D too…

Got my Mellow D from my cousin who bought it from Australia for me…in my case..it needs more air input to the fipple…and its harder to reach the higher notes. Its easier on my Guiness whistle though…

Hi, DeWhistle!

There is a Sam Ash in Ontario and one in Cerritos. My local S.A. carries Feadogs and Acorns.

A friend of mine has a woodwind and brass store. These stores often carry whistles, flutophones, slide whistles, etc. You might call some in your area.

Good luck on your search,
Gary

I have those same whistles, plus a C… and the C is the best of the three. I’m trying new ones now and there are so many choices that I simply want a good one that has a different sound than a Walton. Maybe a Susato… my D has taken on a metallic taste than cleaning didn’t amend…

HiDewhistle, there are a number of places to buy whistles in SoCal, one particular place that has numerous whistle both low and high end is “The Shade Tree” , by the way this is also for you Gary", check out the link for the phone number and web page. The Shade Tree is a Guitar Shop primarily but the carry other instruments. I called them yesterday and they even had two Glen Schultz whistles in stock (wood coccabola). Check them out.

If your going to have WhOA then you had better research where to get your fix!

Good luck, don’t break the bank.

Darin,

Yikes, that’s 120 miles from home port! But thanks for the info. I’ll find an excuse to swing by there some day. I’m gonna nominate you the SoCal Dean of whistle information. You’ve helped me tremendously. With your help, I’ve purchased a Kerry low D, a good Generation in Eb and a good Gen D.

We need Dale or Dazedinla to setup a board where we can list stores that sell whistles, etc. It would help a lot of people.

We could just have a thread and get it put into the Matrix… but it would go out of date eventually.

Gary, I have done a lot of asking and research about where to purchase whistles in the SoCal area because I hate to buy before I try, especially low end whistles. Sam Ash does not cut it for me.

Open invitation to any one in SoCal if your looking for a particular whistle just E-mail me, I might know where to find it or know someone that does.

Cool beans, if I once settle on what I want, I may do that… or find an excuse to go to the beach, which is not at all hard. I think I finally know what I want in a whistle… don’t know much about chiff and slightly less about fipple  but I do know that my Mellow D whistle is too danged hard to use for the upper octave. I’d like a tabor, but right now I’m under certain restraints and I heard they can be loud, and I couldn’t possibly afford the drum for years yet…

Yeah, I’ll get back to you if I don’t take my chances ordering.

There’s Sam Ash a couple of miles from where I work so I popped over today and picked up a brass D Feadog with instruction book and CD. I can’t say anything about the whistle because I’m still at “work” and the second octave is just too loud. But I think the booklet is one of the best I’ve seen for the complete beginner. Progresses slowly, has tab and sheet music nice tunes. Not a bad deal for about $16

Mike

Mike,

That’s the set I got with my first Feadog. The book is good. Two of my sons are using it to learn the whistle.

The Feadog’s second octave is loud but characteristic of the whistle’s tone. I recorded a second octave whistle solo using mine and with gobs of reverb it soars. Don’t do it too often because your ears will ring!

Congratulations,

Gary
P.S. What are you going to name it?

Gary,
I never thought of naming it. How about Rover?
