When I do researches on irish music I often come across a website, but now that i need it i can’t find it anymore. Basically, it lists the irish musicians divided by they region, and on some it shows some links with basic infos. If someone could post the link it would be great… ![]()
This may be the one you’re looking for:

It is that one, thanks a lot ![]()

People these are very good websites, especially the first one. I’m dicovering really great early musicians (not only on flute) and learning a lot about regional styles. Well worth many visits.
I think you should realise that the Roche violin site only names musicians they found reference to on the web. That leads to some really awkward inclusions and great many omissions. Any underlying knowledge of the musicians referenced (judging by the ones I know directly) or the area treated, if existent at all, is very very thin.
Some caution would be in order. Realise that many extremely fine and important musicians, living and dead, don’t get a look in at all at all.
I’m just dipping into that site again following a discussion ‘elsewhere’. From what you say, there is not enough there to build a ‘balanced picture’ of regional style. Do you think there is enough of a sample to exemplify or test other peoples generalisations in a useful way? In the absence of such a ‘web resource’ we would still only get a haphazard sample through personal experience.
I have looked at only one county, the one I am most familiar with. If the picture that comes across from that is representative for the whole site’s content, I think you are looking at a haphazard collection of references. It’s at best a very skewed and uncritical picture.
Buy yourself the second edition of the Compendium (about to become available), that wouldn’t be flawless either but at least it’s solid information.
Thanks for pointing that out.
I’ve a lot to learn and there are so many musicians I haven’t listened to yet. Finding a list is not at all easy, and if you don’t have the names you can’t do researches or try to get some recordings. I couldn’t find a site with more names yet, and even with more famous early people is not easy to find stuff on the web. If you know of better online resources, please let us know.
What’s the Compendium and how can I find it?
oops, I keep doing that. It’s actually the Companion of irish Traditional Music- Fintan Vallely (ed)

Oh sure, I already wanted to get that book. Thanks.
