Where do I stick the mic?

Sometimes I play whistle or flute at church. Sometimes people even like it.

However, don’t really know where to place the mic. I tried to put it at the bottom (can I call it the bell?). That didn’t work so well, so I tried to move around, so the highest open hole would be nearest to the mick, but this took to much moving and thinking…

I have this crazy feeling that I should be putting it by the fipple/blow hole (I forgot how to spell ombeucher, as I’m sure you can see). I haven’t had a chance to test this out yet.

I think thats where the mic goes, because in a concert thats where I saw the people play the whistle at, I guess thats where the most sound comes out?

You’re perfectly right!

The sound is produced at the fipple/blowhole, so that’s the place to mic. But don’t but the mic too near to the f/b since that will make ths sound very bright and harsh because it overdrives the mic. ~5-7cm interspace should be ok.

Put the mic on a boom stand and play under it so it picks up from the fipple window. But not so clase that it picks up the air stream.

I don’t go to recording studio church. We don’t have a boom stand.

You play whistle/flute at church too? hi-five

Yeah, in my experience the window (or the embouchre in the case of the flute) is the best place to put the mic.

But don’t but the mic too near to the f/b since that will make ths sound very bright and harsh because it overdrives the mic.

Taht is true too. When playing in the second octave I step back- a few full feet, acutally, but taht’s cause we have big speakers in a tiny room (We meet in the hotel).

Nearly guessed that, isn’t much different from german

You’re welcome

You could place the mic just below the fipple opening and the first hole… slightly closer towards the mouthpiece. That can be as close as it gets - since there won’t be direct wind on the mic - and the sound would still be as loud from the source.

Don’t put it too close to ur nose either, lotsa wind coming out of it too… at least that’s the case with me.

My suggestion is to place the mic above - and aimed at - the wind window, at a distance of 6-12". This will work well for indoor venues, like your church. If you wish to get a bit more technical, you can try a kind of ‘mechanical compression’ of the sound. On very low notes, move a bit in toward the mic. On very high notes, move a bit more away from the mic. This evens out the subjective sound for the audience. If you actually have a compressor on the mic channel, this effect will be done for you by the electronics…

Good luck with your endeavor.

Place your mouth (fipple or mouth-hole) next to the mic - that’s where the sound comes out.

Q: Where do I stick the mic?
A: (another question) Are you Michael Bolton?

There are smaller versions of a boom stand.
