I love African Pink Ivory and Blackwood… Both very expensive…
Are you planning to make UP chanters from the same material?
Im making one right now for me.. I’ll post a pic in a few days… This stuff has identical working properties as African Blackwood, Its just Pink…
I can see where this wood might be popular with the Ladies… but I have never been very fond of the color pink… I don’t really know why. I much perfer the look of cocobolo to most other woods used for UPs.
Cocobollo is just a Pink ivory tree that grew too close to a melon patch… 
I used only like dark wood chanters (ebony, ABW, etc), but recently I’ve grown to like cocobolo and rosewood. I’m interested to see (and hear) the Pink Ivory chanter when it’s done.
And cocobolo is a lot cheaper than pink ivory… I like the stuff; it’s hard and dense, perfectly suitable for pipes…but it’s pink

Why is it called pink “ivory”? It’s wood whereas ivory is an animal product.

I am quite fond of cocobolo too and not very fond of pink, my daughter loves it though. I have seen some very unattractive pink ivory, but that GHB tenor drone looks fairly good in that pic.
Mopane and zircote also are very good looking woods. Some of the best looking sets I have seen are AFB or ebony, though.
You have to get the dark red Pink Ivory, Its a rarity that you dont see very often in pipes… Its just something different… People have to have an appreciation for this wood to like it…and get over the fact that its pink/red…

Holly is awsome, Its not very dense though, It would probably make good mounts… When you turn it its hairy like my dog…

Good question. I’ve also read somewhere that it’s known as the “royal wood of the Zulus” or something like that. Maybe they called it pink ivory because of its hardness and density…???
I had a Cillian Holly Stick… It was a great Chanter. I had to give it back 
as it was only on loan until my Cillian blackwood chanter arrived
Interesting..I’ve never seen any really dark red pieces. I’d like to get ahold of some though…I’ve seen some nice looking curly/flamed pieces. I wonder how it would react to fuming?
Here is a Knive made with some of the darker stuff… its more of a red…
What does everyone think of Pupleheart? My observations is it is similar in grain and density as Rosewood. It is not a popular choice for chanters and there are only a small handful of makers that use it… what an interesting color it is… purple is still masculin right?

Davey Stephenson experimented with many wood combinations on his pipes. I have one of his blackwood chanters with maple mounts.

Pink Ivory Chanter?
My own preference is for light-coloured sets. I love boxwood, and the grain my new curly lemonwood set by David Boisvert is stunning.
