Anyone else ever have this happen… you scratch one area of your body and feel a little twinge in a distant, apparently unrelated part? Stop scratching, the twinge stops, scratch again and the twinge returns. Sometimes this is constant–eg, I have one spot on the outside of my heel which, if I scratch it vigorously, produces a little prickling sensation on my flank every time. Other times it happens just once or twice and then can’t be reproduced.
Is there a name for this? Any explanation of how it works?
I know what you’re talking about. In fact there was a time where I was getting some PT from a guy who was doing shiatsu, Feldenkrais, Rolfing, and other stuff on me and one way or another the subject came up. It appeared to be no surprise to him at all, for he nodded sagely with a knowing look. I interpreted that to mean he thought I was crazy.
No, just kidding. He did have an explanation for it and said that it was normal, but I don’t recall the details.
In reflexology the foot is held or massaged to affect health in other places in the body. It is said to work through the energy meridians also used in acupuncture or acupressure. How does acupuncture work? That question seems to be a mystery to modern science, although acupuncture is becoming an accepted treatment in the West for some human conditions.
I know exactly what you’re talking about, Paul.
It usually happens for me when lightly rubbing
rather than scratching, though. Sometimes, I
can tickle the back of my right hand between
the tendons of the index and middle finger and
feel a tickle in my throat.
I’ve often wondered if that was how people
came up with Acupressure points.
