What whistle should I get?

Hi. I’m looking for a low tin whistle in the key of D and am a bit overwhelmed by the number of brands out there. could you please inform me of a couple of decent brands?

I’d look for one of these: Burke, Goldie and MK. If those are out of your budget, I might suggest starting with a Dixon.

If you’d like a really fine low D that is no longer readily available, there is a Copeland low D on eBay at the moment with a BIN price. I have no knowledge of the seller.

Plenty of videos here reviewing various whistles including a good number of low Ds.

Which whistles do you have now and what qualities of those whistles do you like?

I’ve got a Susato USA in the key of C and D, a Clarke in C and D, and a Generation in Bb and Eb. The Susatos are easily the best in my collection, but they don’t seem to make tenors.

Susato definitely make low whistles, the L series, in both Kildare two piece and Dublin one piece and with or without keys. They’re on the website HERE

If you like susato whistles, I would definitely get a susato low D. I bought one of the first low D’s that they make. It had a wooden block in the mouth piece. I found it easy to play and it sounded great. I recorded a lot with this whistle. I then got a Copeland and Grinter low D. I’ve recorded with both of these as well. Honestly, it would be hard to tell the difference. Maybe someday I’ll post some comparative clips. Interestingly enough, when I got my Grinter, I followed up with him to tell him that I received his whistle, I mentioned that it seemed like an exact copy of my Susato. He was surprised as he said he had never seem one. Ai there you go, you could get a Grinter style low D that is plays very well. It’s a good intro to the low whistle. I’m very, very regretful that I sold that Susato. These whistles are sleeping giants in the low D realm. IMVHO.
