I just bought 5 secondhand whistles. Solid aluminium with plastic fipple insert, and with the name DAVEY stamped into the body on all except for the largest which had a clear plastic sticker with the name Davey in black letters on it.
At first I thought they might be home made, as the sound hole on some looked a bit rugged, but then it might be just someone tweaking them that caused that.
I haven’t had a chance to really try them yet, but they were only $5 each, so I took a risk and bought 5 of them. Their were more there, including a bunch of plastic fippled generations, and a clarke, and a fife and a recorder. Obviously someone has unloaded a collection of whistles at the secondhand store. The also had a bunch of wooden ones that were split and damaged, which had been consigned to the rubbish.
So has anyone heard of this brand? Are they any good, and should I go back and buy some more?
I bought 5 of the ‘Davey’ branded ones as they looked the most professional. I think there were 3 more of those - they were the same length as ones I had already chosen (basically I bought 5 of different lengths - no keys marked, but I think the largest might be a low D or close to it)
There were, maybe, 10 or more misc. stuff - as I said, generations, clarke, a silver fife (battered looking) a wooden recorder (or whistle - not sure).
The store owners obviously don’t know what they are worth, because even the generations sell for more than that here (I’m in Australia, so $5 is worth less than in US)
I bought them in a hurry as I was just walking past to buy some coffee in my break. I am back at work now, and they are in my car, but I’ll take some photo’s when I get home (about 5 hours from now)
Nothing especially inside about it. Spilllane, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, has, on several occasions, posted to this forum purporting to sell whistles, and then deleted the posting.
Update.
This just in a well known Whistle Purveyor, had an E mail offering DS. whistles, he asked for a sample.
So lets wait and see if this time we can get to see one
BTW. wish I had thought of this when I started out makin whistles
