Way, way OT: Empty space in your head

Okay, this is something that just hit me: Imagine that you had no education whatsoever and that, in fact, you couldn’t even read [Chiff & Fipple], let alone have access to a computer. You had no concept of how the world around you worked or any idea of what was beyond your town or region. You’d never heard of Steven Hawking or Dale Wisley and the only working television in town was stuck on a channel that only had ‘Charlie’s Angels’ or ‘Starsky and Hutch’ reruns (the TV series, not the movies).

What do you think your brain would be like? What would you think and how would the billions of neurons occupy themselves?

Hmmmmmmmmmm,
Eric

Eric…what have you been breathing lately??? Is that nitrous or nitrox in those tanks?

I imagine that being unable to read or watch the boob tube wouldn’t be terribly boring…there are plenty of things to do. Stitchery, knitting and making music, playing with the pets, drawing, telling stories, cooking. . .

I could keep myself occupied.

most people in that situation live in pre-industrial societies and I’m sure they’re plenty busy making sure they get to eat dinner that night. Trust me, I doubt they’re bored or vapid.

Does the term XXX-Rated give you a clue?

thinks of the kitten picture

I think there’s a room in Hell set up this way (actually I thought Huggy Bear was cool and Farrah was pretty hot).

One thing is for sure. The “space” definately wouldn’t be empty. There is WAY more to life than being able to read and C&F.

Shallow answers, folks. You’re not thinking the question through and all the things that it implies.

You’re calling us shallow when you think the world would end without being able to read or have a computer?

I imagine that, after 5 minutes of that drivel, I would never watch TV again and go stare at the stars…

And I would just cease to exist. For sure.

I’m going to take this one step farther and remove your working television - it doesn’t fit into the rest of your scenario. (edit - I’m also going to assume that you’re not talking about one person in a town where everyone is comspiring to keep that person uneducated, but rather a community of similar persons.)

Lacking a formal education doesn’t make a person stop asking Why or How. I’d listen to the stories of my elders explaining our world and all that was experienced in it, including the purpose for humans being in it. Eventually, depending on the culture and its rules, I imagine I’d add my own stories to the mix, and/or debate with my friends about What Is, and/or think about the higher powers that made it all.

I’d experience my environment without the barriers of a television, a wall, a window, a screen, and be able to read the weather and the ground so as to help me to know what tomorrow might bring.

I’d provide for my social group in the best way I could. This might involve:

**hunting (knowing how to read animal signs, when to hunt the local animals, what to do if you find yourself hunted instead)

**gathering/farming (when do the items I need grow? What do I have to do to find them? What do I have to do to plant/tame them so I can rely on their production? What do I do if it looks like that production is failing? Are there other people around with whom I can trade? What is valuable to them?)

**raising children (what do they need to know to survive? to survive socially? to stay healthy? to be productive? to be happy? What do I do when they get ill or injured? How long can they be gone before I need to worry about them?)

**producing goods (what needs to be created? How do I do it? What do I need to be able to start? Who holds the knowledge of how to do it?)

**protecting the people (Are there neighboring peoples? Are they friendly? If not, this could be a problem. Are we in danger? What about local predators? Are all the children accounted for? What about natural disasters? Are we prepared for events that are likely to happen, given our surroundings?)

**protecting the people’s knowledge (Religious duties. Storytelling and history. Written language/documents. Musical knowledge. Sporting events. The associated rituals, rules, accessories, for all of the above)

I don’t know…seems to me I’d probably have quite a bit to think about. And fewer people to tell me what to think instead. My brain would be plenty full, and I’d probably be amused at the ignorance of ‘educated’ people coming and trying to survive in my lifestyle.

How many college graduates have the knowledge to provide their own food? I only know one, and he still goes to the grocery store for things.

PS - I really don’t want to get roped into an argument or even a heated debate. I’ve got enough of that going on right now, thanks. So please consider your wording if you are one of those who tend to get into arguments. I’d appreciate it, thanks.

Sam…do you think that all parts of the brain serve the same function, or do you think that some parts are specilized in what they excel at? For example, I’m a highly intelligent human that can’t spell. What if survival and the instincts that go along with it only occupy part of the brain.

Nanohedron, you have perhaps given one of the most likely answers in your rather telling statement:

Does the term XXX-Rated give you a clue?-

Wahoo!!!

Cranberry - you, of all people should appreciate the love and understanding and support that the people on this board are capable of…and you say C&F isn’t a role player in you life?

There is WAY more to life than being able to read and C&F.

But again, you miss my point. C&F is a gnat buzzing around the bunghole of a flea when it comes to the big picture.

Ava…homing in like a cruise missile (bad pun…sorry).

Eric…what have you been breathing lately??? Is that nitrous or nitrox in those tanks?

Tyghress, your response has been the most perceptive, however, please ignore what I have been breathing…'cause I’m not gonna share.

I’m just trolling to get people’s response and how they think things would be. In my mind it would be an entirely different existence…

Cheers,
Eric

I’m sorry if I was too harsh or mean (gimme a B, gimme an I, gimme a TCH!), I didn’t really think this thread was meant to be so…deep. I’m sorry that I’ve bothered you, vaporlock. I really am. :frowning:

Have you ever lived in the “hills”? I know some people who are similar to what you imagine and they get by just fine. Just people…

I’m not sure what you’re asking (or what the hell the point of this thread is to begin with) but if you mean by “same function” as the function of allowing a human being to get through the day’s tasks, whatever they may be, then yes. However, it’s quite obvious through medical scans that different areas of the brain are active during different activities, so it’s reasonable to say the brain has specialized areas: visual cortex, memory, etc. I don’t, however, think there is a specific “tv” part of the brain or a “reading” part of the brain. The brain is pretty elastic during early childhood; it tailors itself to the tasks assigned to it. If a child doesn’t need to read, then he won’t develop the neural pathways or whatever needed for it. Those neurons utilized for reading in some people would probably be used for a task the child does need for survival. I don’t think they would just sit dormant, particularly considering that written language is an artificial construct and is relatively recent in human history, from an evolutionary standpoint. I don’t think we’re born with a “reading” chunk of brain specifically set aside for that task and no other. The part of the brain that deals with visual information in general probably handles the task of reading, but could obviously be used for other visual tasks. There’s nothing that states an individual neuron can only be used in a single narrow activity to say the least and I see no reason to assume that in the first place.

That’s okay Cran…I actually figured that you would end up entwined in this thread before I even posted it. That’s why your initial response dissappointed me. I just have to remember that since I don’t post much anymore people may not know me as well as I know them (from reading the posts), so the actual apology should come from me. I’ve gotta hang it out there for people to see…which is kinda what I’m doing now.

Hangin…
Eric

Stewy, you’ve been here, haven’t you? I grew up with people who couldn’t read or write, and who didn’t have electricity or running water at all (I didn’t have electricity or running water for a large part of my childhood but luckily have the gift of reading). They survived, and are still surviving.

How could you have guessed that? I’m in threads that don’t even exist yet.

Seriously, though, I’m sorry for making light of something that wasn’t meant to be that way. My bad.

Hmmm…

Prioritizing, I’d say 1)food and shelter, 2)community (even a hermit stands in relation to a group) and its wellbeing, 3) creativity and craftsmanship, and 4) pursuit of wisdom and spiritual practice.
