Can’t think of any tunes in my library with just bodhran + flute or bodhran + accordion.
Anyone care to name a couple of nice tracks that has this instrumental composition?
I’ve found some on youtube, mainly with Johnny McDonagh, but I’m mainly interested in tunes from albums.
McConnell sings, whistles and flutes. Morton plays concertina, bodhran and sings. It’s a nice set of varied duets, among which is a flute/bodhran jig set [McNamara’s (Connie O’Connell’s)/The Blue Angel (King’s Fancy)] and a set of reels [Gather Round the Fire/Brereton’s], as well a set of reels [The Irish Jubilee [Song]/The Glass of Beer/The Longford] on whistle & bodhran.
It was recorded the same year as Chieftains 2, when the entire corpus of recorded bodhran consisted of Chieftains 1 and, well, Chieftains 1. Morton and McConnell used to have to explain to audiences every night what that thing was they were about to hear.
bodhran and accordion
Pure Bodhran compilation Robbie Harris and Jig Jungle.
and I’m not sure, but I think that on this compilation there’s also some old recording of flute and bodhran
There is a bodhran tutorial DVD that is
entirely like that. Just bodhran and box.
(though it wasn’t a very good tutorial…)
I’ll have to see which one it is when I
get home.
You might want to check out the first track of Larsen and League on The Green House. I think they do both flute and bodhran as well as concertina and bodhran on that, I think. I particularly like Paddy’s bodhran style as being almost melodic instead of simply rhythmic, (though I guess not all do), and regardless of what you think of his philosophy, Larsen is a wonderful flautist. Check it out: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/larsenandleague
I had no idea Michael Flatley had that in him. But wasn’t surprised to see he had that on him.
Very nice performances in those videos. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. Strong rugged rhythm (in lack of knowledge regarding music theory, I try to use words that I hope can hint at my meaning), instead of lightning-fast, flowing reels.
