current bid $400

The bid is still $400. That’s very cheap. As previously mentioned, january is not a month to sell pipes. Christmas has to be paid for and no one has the money to spend on pipes.

I’ve heard Vignoles play and he’s quite good, but I’ve not heard much about him as a pipe maker. He has a workshop in Galway. What’s his reputation like?

My first set was a Vignoles practice set. Michael is a very helpful fellow and his chanter has a great tone and is easily played. When I was in Galway last summer I gave him a call and he tweaked my two reeds made for his chanter. It’s a wide bore D made in the Rowsome fashion I’ve been told.
The reeds played well for a couple of months and then they died. One reed wasn’t playing at all and the other one is way out of tune. Since I’ve been playing them in tune before this is not due to my lack of skill. It could be the season changes but I doubt that.
I think the chanter is good, the bag is usually made of canvas and the bellows are robust and quite nice looking. THe only thing that’s faulty in this I think is the reed. Over all, a good, cheap set but you will get reed problems which is what you don’t want as a beginner.

I don’t think reed problems are exclusive to any particular maker. Temperature and humidity are the biggest influences, followed closely by inexperience.

When I first started playing, I didn’t even know there was a reed on the top of my chanter. When it started sounding funny I called the guy I bought it from and gave out to him for having ripped me off  . Anyway, he very patiently listened to me and explained what I should do (very carefully remove the chanter top and very carefully adjust the bridle).

I think it says it’s reeded by Tim Britton, so the reed should be in good shape unless I missed something.
