Veillon - Barou - Hamon in concert (breton music)

Three breton flute players, Jean-Michel Veillon, Sylvain Barou and Erwan hamon in concert a few days ago for a big fest-noz in Rennes (with Alain Genty and Ronan Pellen) : http://www.yaouank.com/ , it starts at 46’.

Hello Bran

Many thanks for that link. I enjoyed it a lot.

Regards

John

that’s crazy stuff, great to see all those dancers, amazing band!

Brilliant. Festou Noz are some of the coolest trad happenings.
And it’s a nice clip for playing ‘name that flute.’ I think I’m spotting Morvan, Wilkes, Lehart…

You’re right for the names. Morvan (D) and Lehart (Bb) for Sylvain Barou and Erwan Hamon, Wilkes for Jean-Michel Veillon. But I don’t know for his other flute, with the ivory head.

that was great ! thank you so much for posting !

Awesome clip! They’re like the “Grateful Dead” of the flute world, throngs of dancing bohemians included.

not to repeat myself, but i had this clip on all weekend (as i secluded myself to study). i had it playng in the background. having little exposure to breton music, i found it quite mesmerizing after awhile of listening to it. the entire clip is so enchanting but wow the fluting was incredible hear.
i suspected it was going to be special when the lovely bflat flute began to kick in at about the 46’ mark and the fun began. a big salute to Jean-Michel Veillon, Sylvain Barou and Erwan Hamon (and Alain Genty and Ronan Pellen) !

The white-headed flute J-MV plays is a cocus body with ivorine (artificial ivory) head by Pol Jezequel (Poljez).

BTW, note the superb Breton sound engineering - fantastic natural flute sound, no horrid reverb… They always seem to have very good sound men in Brittany, who know how to amplify acoustic instruments. In Britain we usually/far too often get rock sound techs who just don’t get it with acoustic music and who have to be told not to add a bucket of reverb to any flute or whistle…

good point! too often the sound man is overlooked

Hi Jem, if I’m not mistaken (and I think I’m not) J-M Veillon is playing a wilkes flute which he had in Belgium at the workshop and in Ennis. All the best

Mostly he is, Ronnie, yes, as Bran Ruz noted above - I was filling in as requested - J-M swaps a few times (as do the others - watch the whole performance) and plays the PolJez - I think possibly with an Eb body, though not certain about that - can’t see why else he’d swap, though.
