Upper back and neck pain to hell...

I’ve been playing the flute for three years. I never loved anything more than playing the flute ( exept for my girlfriend of course…just in case she reads this… ). But I’ve been having upper back pain and a soar neck for months now. And it begins to slowly to spoil the plaisure now.

I know a lot you has or ever had the same problem.
Please tell me how you solved this? Any of you has simple things to care about while playing to avoid neck pain?

I’m ready to try anything since I don’t want to give up the flute for any reason…

Review your position. Stretch. Also, lift weights, do exercises
that strengthen the upper body. FWIW.

Thanks for reply Jim.
Actually, since I asked this question, I found a very good site where there’s very good descriptions of the best position possible.

Here it is: http://www.flutelab.com/

They also have pictures of metal flutes with weird necks for people having serious problems. It’s really bizzard. :boggle:

Well, thanks for reply and have fun!

Ok! For any of you having pain in the upper back and the neck, here’s a start of a solution that I found last night!

Practicing for few hours yesterday, I realised I played with my head straight , witch is good, but pulling back (like if the flute was too close to me). I found that if I simply puch my head forward A LITTLE BIT, to keep my spine perfectly straight up) the pain doesn’t come at all! And today, I fell great! No pain in the back!

It’s, of course, conclusions from a single night of practice, but it seems to be a very good start! And I got these clues on http://www.flutelab.com/ .

So any of you having neck pain, simply change your head position trying to keep to spine straight, and it should be a start.

Yahoo! Let’s play pain free!

I think this is also one of the ideas Alexander Technique (google for details, I don’t really know much about it expect that the few lessons I had felt good) focusses on.

Narcotics are the answer, and you’ll also find you’ll eventually love them more than your girlfriend. When that happens, you won’t care if she reads this or not.
