Glad to see another songwriter/composer on board. I tend to favor melody lines with lyrics. I don’t believe I have encountered another whistle player that does much of that kind of songwriting. Perhaps there is a reason for that ![]()
I wish I were more proficient at sight reading so I could try these tunes out. I do have some questions: do you play, record, then transcribe, or is it some other order? Also how are you making these jpegs? Is it output from your recording software, or are you using some other kind of utility?
Enjoy,
Bill
Nice little tunes! You might want to send the link to them to Claus Von Weiss of Morris Open: the tunes sound like they might be good for Morris Dancing.
Fun little tunes. Interesting…I just ran through them real quick, and noticed that almost every interval between notes is one step in the scale. Counting, I notice four times in the first song, and only once in the second, does the melody jump more than one note in the scale between consecutive notes. Seems a bit odd. Gives them a simple, “nursery rhyme” feel, is that what you’re going for?
Bill, I currently use FINALE 3, which is overkill. It’s software used to create symphonic arrangements. (Being a nerd, I need to have an elephant gun to kill a mouse
) It allows me to create a TIFF image of the arrangement, then I use Microsoft Photo Editor to crop the picture and save it as a JPG. I actually like a product called Mozart, but I didn’t like the fact that you have to send a cashiers check to a company and they’ll send you a CD.
I acutally sit on the couch, play around with the whistle and when I hit a note combination and melody I like, I go and sit in front of the computer and write the song. Nothing real fancy.

Bone, the songs that I’ve been doing recently have been more on the ‘cutesy’ side. That’s just the mode I’m in right now.
I really don’t put that much thought into the style and meter. I just find a combination that I like and hammer it out at the computer.

Thanks for asking the question about the software, Bill. And thanks for the info, Tom. I figured there had to be some programs out there for writing music. Don’t like writing out the notes by hand particularly if I want to give it to someone else. This program makes it look very professional.
There are a lot of software packages out there. Just go up to Google and put in “music notation software”.
Tom
Thanks Tom.
For those reading along, I can share my own experience. I use an old program called Autoscore. It transcribes live music, though like dictation and scanning software there are limitations and errors. These days, I often type out rough ABCs and use the concertina website to produce the sheet music version if I want to share it with others.

I find ABC notation well-suited for whistle melodies. I find ABC faster than fiddling with a mouse on a staff with durations, even when I have the outline from the live recording.
The concertina.net thing is very cool. I’ll give it a try. Thanks again Bill.
