My boyfriend used to own an inexpensive Irish whistle but has lost it. Going off of pictures and knowing it was inexpensive, I believe it was a Walton Irish D whistle. I want to buy him a new one. He is a very talented musician so I thought I could get him something a step up from the Walton, but still inexpensive (though he is experienced, he is not a professional whistler and it is something he would take with him camping, leave out on his desk, etc.). I was toying with the idea of an Original Clarke whistle (natural finish). Would this be a good choice? Are there any other suggestions?
I am looking to spend less than $50 US and for one that is more “traditional” in form and sound (so preferably made in the UK or Ireland and not a plastic body or anything gaudily colored).
I agree with everyone else-- get one for yourself, too! They certainly cost little enough.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with a Walton whistle (some may beg to differ, but…). Some really great players insist on playing the el-cheapos, even. And with all the whistles I have and have tried, I have to say I keep going back to my Walton-- there’s something unique in the sound of it (or maybe it’s just this whistle, specifically).
However, I also agree that you can’t go wrong with a Freeman-tweaked whistle.
