I’d like to find more tunes along the lines of Aran Boat Song or Bonnie Doon. In other words, Scottish or Irish waltzes that are easy pleasing to the ear and to learn / play. All I need is the names and I can take it from there to JC’s ABC tune finder.
Thanks in advance.
Gentle Maiden
South Wind
(Down by the) Sally Gardens
Wild Mountain Thyme
I havn’t tried any of the others that Bloomfield suggested, shall have to try them out soon, but I know Down by the Sally Gardens is one of those songs that is really nice to play.
well, Bloomie beat me to two of the ones I was gonna mention…
How about “Star of County Down”? We found a midi somewhere that does it in a slow, waltz tempo in Bm.
Also, the “Water is Wide” (I forget the Celtic name for the tune).
And "Si Behg, Si Morh (or the hundred of other spellings I’ve seen for this one).
“The Parting Glass” is an easy and soulful air. Also…
“Eamonn a’ Cnoic”
“Mo Ghile Mear”
“Buachaill on Eirne/Come by the Hills”
Redwolf
Planxty Irwin
Rodney’s Glory (set dance)
John Doherty’s Mazourka
Some Scottish standards:
Dark Island
Sun Rises Bright in France
Flow Gently Sweet Afton
I Once Loved a Lass
Come By the Hills
Tiree Love Song
Jock o’ Hazeldean
Eriskay Love Lilt
Turn Ye to Me
Skye Boat Song
Broom o’ the Cowdenknowes
Colin
Planxty Dale Wisely.
No, really.
Then there is D… Da… Dan… Oh, I can’t bring myself to say it.
“The Derry Air?” ![]()
Interesting . . . I can’t remember the last time I heard someone play it, and the only score I have for it is transposed for r*****er (haven’t played it for years - but the book is around somewhere).
But though I had to feel my way through a couple of places, I found I could play the dratted thing from memory. Scary. I’m just glad nobody (to my knowledge) has used the tune for an advertising jingle. Though that might be the one way to get people to quit requesting it. ![]()
Favorite Slow Airs:
- Culloden’s Harvest
- An Feochan
- Fair Maid of Wicklow
- The Black Cat (by Lothlorien)
- Leon’s Waltz
- Stubble Fields of Autumn.
Leon’s Waltz is the most difficult because it has a high Cnat (top of second octave) that can be hard to clear; but, the rest of the above are fairly easy.
I am surprised no one mentioned Inisheer yet. It’s very beautiful.
Cheers,

“O’Carolan’s Draught” is nice,
so is “Da Slockit Light”
-Brett
McPherson’s Lament
I’d also suggest playing the Pikeman’s March slowly.
Philo
thugamar féin an samhradh
Eanach Dhuin (AKA Eanach Chuin)
Coinnleach Glas an Fhomhair
Amhran na Leabhar
Casadh An tSugain
The Dear Irish Boy
The South Wind
The Flower of Sweet Strabane
She Moved Through the Fair
Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore (in spite of the title)
Some Scottish songs:
Charming Polly
I Once Loved a Lass
Gae t’ the Kye wi’ Me
Lang a-Growin’
The Elfin Knight
I know these are all easy, because I’ve at least been able to learn the melodies.

There’s a lovely Scottish waltz called The Mist Covered Mountains (not to be confused with another tune of the same or nearly same name, which I think is a reel). If you’re familiar with the movie Local Hero, it’s the waltz they play in the ceilidh.

The next question is where to find them.
