Thanks for the website tips and also advice regarding other whistles.
Going to order a Blackbird this week. Then I will get the chance to try out a nickel whistle, in addition to saving my breath.
Just my two cents worth, but I think a Sindt might be a nice option. I find them to be very easy to play and reliable in terms of responsiveness. In my experience, they have better volume and intonation while maintaining a traditional sound.
Personally, I think a whistler - even a pro - can often get by just fine with the cheaper whistles.
The Original is a great whistle. The sound has a nice character and the whistle plays very nicely. The only reason I don’t play mine more often is that I just don’t have the puff to keep up with it, and I do prefer to be able to tune my whistles just a tad rather than asking the whole band to retune just for me.
I play standard, cheap whistles with plastic heads and nickel plated tubes. The basic £5 or less ones that you see in music stores and souvenir shops.
They were good enough for Micho Russell and Denis O’Brien, and they’re more than good enough for me.
That said, Jerry’s Mellow Dogs are brilliant and not very expensive. A very worthwhile variation on a basic cheapie whistle.
