Tight Tuning slide

I have a tunable aluminum whistle that I believe is sold under the Chieftain brand. Great sound, but the tuning slide is way too tight.

Inside the joint is a tangle mass of thread covered in some sort of sticky material. I thought about removing most or all of it to see how tight the joint is and then replacing it with something if there’s too much slippage or leaking.

Has anyone does this before? Suggestions? Words of warning?

thanks,
Eddie

It is usually waxed dental floss or waxed thread. I typically take it off and replace it with teflon (which is thinner and more controlable.

I agree with Erik. Have had this problem before and teflon replacement is much better

great, I’ll try that tonight.

thanks.

I learned my lesson when I first bought a used Chieftain from a member of this Board. The whistle arrived all gucked up with sticky muck stuff on the entire slide.
I was disappointed, & surprised that something which I believed was significant would not have been previously disclosed. The stickiness was sufficiently significant to make tuning more difficult than any maker would intend, and so sticky that I had to watch what it would come in contact with (particularly my hands).
When I inquired from the seller what he had done, he declined to acknowledge what he had done or to provide details.
The lesson: if you’re considering buying a used whistle without physically beig able to examine it, ask the Seller to first state in “writing” what modifications or adjustments if any have been made to any part of the whistle including the tuning slide, since initial purchase from the maker.
If the seller is a second or subsequent owner, the statement can be qualified by stating what happened during his/her period of ownership, and his/her best belief as to what modifications were made previously.

Hi! Is Erik talking about teflon tape or does he mean something else? Have any of you had experience with removing the standard thread-guck(?) and replacing it with something else?
thanks, Daniel
