thinking of the white side of...

…Chipmunk Cheeks?? Cheeks puffed out perhaps? Sorry if I seem confused…

Yes, in my usual ‘funny/twisted’ thinking - I did mean Cheeks puffed out. As a kid I fed chipmunks (and hamsters) - and they would take the food, stuff in their cheek, repeat, until the cheeks were much fatter than the rest of the varmit… (:open_mouth:

I even had air under my top lip at one point. It worked, but didn’t feel quite right. And I would say my lips are getting used to it - before they had a ‘buzzy’ feeling - similar to what I felt after playing coronet.

I also read - I think on wikipedia - about warming up your embouchure. I’ll talk to my wife about that  .

I agree - a sticky would be nice - of links, photos… instruction… good sound, bad sound.

And I am finding that the 1st octave has a ‘similar’ embouchure(but not constant, especially the lowest note) , where as the 2nd (and 3rd) is ‘tighter’. I’ve also found I can play it by breathing no harder than a normal breath (at least in the 1st octave) … and the pitch doesn’t change by blowing (a bit) harder (to an extent), it just changes the volume - which is really next to impossible for me on whistles. I’m really enjoying it so far. I have more ‘clear sounds’ than ‘really breathy or hollow’ sounds. My left hand has bothered me at times though - so experimenting with different ways of holding it - and trying to relax - sensing when I am holding too tightly. Same goes for the lips..
The aroma is nice too - kinda like a campfire.

I would bet that at some point in the future, you will obtain another flute to address your increasing interests in the instrument.

I had been looking and the Forbes flute, just not sure if I’m ready to make that (price) jump - yet. Why not have 3?

…well since I’ve had the 1st for < 1 week and am looking at another … there COULD be that possibility…

I just need to get home and do some last minute checking/deciding on the offset hole thing, and send some $…

I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5PctGe8UjI (a helpful video on youtube)- helped me quite a bit really (less breathy sound)
another video suggested directing the airflow downward

I have to concentrate to keep the lips in the proper form. Less ‘funny feeling’ after playing.

He’s right. ‘Eeyore’ doesn’t work at all.

‘Eeyore’ might work if you’re after a more melancholy sound perhaps… I don’t know but I just don’t trust a talking head! Where’s the rest of the bloke in that video?! Or is it that his head was all that was going to fit into the camera frame?! Also, why doesn’t he have a proper beard instead of that silly looking thing he’s got…Oh, hang on. Flutes…That’s right. Not “take the piss out of the bloke trying to be helpful” forum. My bad sorry…I feel the urge to pooh a grain of rice now. :stuck_out_tongue:  :poke:

 :tomato:

well the “thinking of the white side of..” finally got the best of me. My ‘heavenly whitewood flute’ (aka Tipple) (with large embouchure, offset fingering, 3 piece , lip plate, wedge..) arrived yesterday)

1st impressions - nice quality polishing/buffing - it’s purdy!.. the embouchure appears to be the same size - or smaller than my B Miller (F) bamboo flute. It’s a larger diameter and has a thicker wall than the bamboo flute as well. Fingering (mainly the right hand) - was one of my big concerns - as previous posters mentioned - much easier on the flute - much easier! Interestingly, I had to work on the left hand/wrist comfort, not the right. The large (2nd) hole isn’t a problem to cover either.

Of course, having played flute for <1 month, I have to work on my embouchure - sometimes it’s good (with a bit of a ‘dirty reedy sound’ , sometimes not so good (becomes kinda breathy… to sometimes disappearing)).

Thanks to all who shared their thoughts while I was ‘on this journey’

And thanks to Doug for making a great affordable flute

If you lived closer we could get together and laugh at each other. I’ve got those issues too, but I’m on the improve with all the good advice I’ve been given on the forum and mostly by PM. No names will be mentioned or else it wouldn’t have been a PM.
I want me a Tipple too now. Bugger!

I can match you in frustration. I kept thinking I was doing ok, I’d go up an octave, come back down and . . . nothing but a pffffsst.

Finally, having read and read through threads here I figured that I wasn’t getting a seal on the lower tone holes. I’d start with a seal, then not quite manage it when replacing my finger. The standard grip didn’t quite work for me.

So I spent a while trying different finger positions until I found one where I could feel the seal. Made a massive difference.

I’d go up an octave, come back down and . . . nothing but a pffffsst.

still happens to me occasionally - more so if I’m trying to play quietly, or I’ve been playing for a while (maybe 20 minutes), or right at 1st.. or (ok - so maybe ‘occasionally’ isn’t quite right)… Happens mostly on the low D - I have found that if I slightly roll the flute away it helps with that.

The playing experience seems like ‘lots about geometry’: the position of the flute - rotational, (discovered a ‘sweet spot’ last night - rotated towards me - quite reedy and dark sounding - nice  ) … as well as how far the ‘low (my right)’ hand is pushed away from the body. Add in the vertical axis … plus the lips - loose/tight pushed out… velocity/pressure of the breath - there is quite a bit to it. Then ya gotta hit those holes

The most challenging notes I have are A and B in the 2nd octave, and hitting a clean 3rd octave… and then keeping it all consistent. I agree with other posters - the flute has more potential vs a whistle - for expression.

What’s the saying — you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink…

Patience and practice
