My favorites though are the ones with vocals. That’s the way folks still sing around here if you find the right folks, and I love it. Plus, Dad and I use to do the Banks of the Ohio so that’s a particular favorite.
when i was at Southern Illinois University… it was during the 80’s, Skaggs’ big country-top-40 period… i took a Music Biz class which involved travel to Nashville once a week to meet with industry bigshots. One of them, when asked about Skaggs, asked the class to turn off any recording devices and then intimated his opinion of Ricky:
My thinking exactly. Oh, I’ll see him this year, one way or t’other, don’t you worry about that! I hope he’ll hang in there a few more years, though…they make 'em pretty tough, hereabouts.
Well I’ve seen The Stones, Santana, B.B.King, Dylan - several times - and a holy host of others.
I would give my left/ right 'nad to be in the same room as the Doc.
Just to say..I was there…same room..same place as a God among men.
A guitar player before it was popular or profitable.
I like all of the many Doc CDs I have but my favourite doesn’t actually feature him much at all, at least not as a virtuoso. It’s The Watson Family where he plays with his extended family. Really raw back porch stuff.
In a very different style, I really like the Rev. Gary Davis.
I’ve got a great Smithsonian CD of Doc and Jean Ritchie. She said it was so funny the first time they met - he was so surprised to find this “little gal’ in New York that knew all the home songs”.
I haven’t had the privilage of seeing Doc in person, but I did get to see Earl a couple of years ago when he was travelling with the Chieftians. My first dulcimer teacher (who is also a fantastic harpist) got to fill in on harp and her “sound check” was playing back up to Earl and “Foggy Mt. Breakdown”.
But for TRUE guitar playing - my favorite was Chet Atkins. Actually, he was my dad’s favorite, and I grew up with those records on constantly. I took dad to a concert Chet did with local Pops the Father’s Day of the year my dad died.
