Hello everybody. In less than a week, the great folks at http://www.bigwhistle.co.uk/ sent me my new Dixon Trad. My first comment after trying it out was “che figata!” - that is, “wow, terrific!”
In my view, this whistle is exactly how low-cost traditional whistles should be. Beautiful, pure tone with a hint of chiff, well balanced octaves, good intonation, the volume is slightly above average, low air requirements. What else could one ask for?
If it had been available two years ago, I wouldn’t have started my whistle collection - and I wouldn’t have tried making my own.
Can you tell me about the low whistle when you get it? My Alba low F is my favourite whistle, and I would like to know how Stacey’s other whistles are like.
I can tell you that the alba A is a beautiful whistle.. plays just right. The G is very nice- I’ve tried a low C, which was… big, and not incredibly loud, but nice to play.
Yep - I’ll be more than happy to give you a rundown on the Alba Low D when it arrives. I was thinking of going with a Kerry, but there have been so many good posts about the Albas that I thought “what the heck!”
Well nice whistle. For £15, a total bargain. Very easy to play and really nicely balanced all the way through both octaves with a lovely voice throughout.
oxx ooo works fine for C nat for me.
I think this whistle is going to be extremely popular.
Oh bother! It looks like I will have to add another whistle to the collection. (What will my family think? I suppose it can’t be too much worse than they already think. ) At least its cheap! (And a cheap whistle looks really nice compared to the Kerry Pro Low D I’m looking at. ($340 )) Thanks for the tip.
I just got my dixon trad a few days ago. It is the best whistle for the price hands down. I would love to post a sound clip but I don’t know how. Little help please.
If you have a website, you can just upload the file to a folder on your host and quote the URL, alternately you can use one of the posting services such as http://www.myspace.com/
There’s also a good clip on my site in the Dixon section (can’t directly post it here without approval from the artist.)
I have owned one of these for a week or so now, but it is nothing like it is described.
It prob. is just my lack of playing ability, but just so you know what I think - I love the pureness of tone in the lower octave but when c# is reached it totally loses the ‘pureness’ and becomes quite raspy from there onwards. also it sounds like the c# is a little flat (but that is prob my breathing), as well as that I have no problem with loudness - in fact it is one of my quieter whistles.
As you can probably tell by this post i am a n00b.
I listened to the clip…the whistle doesn’t seem to be very quickly responsive…there are a lot of missed (squawked) notes. It could be the player, I suppose. But from all the great stuff posted here, I was expecting the whistle in the recording to sound much better than it does - in tone, too.
I have a Dixon nontunable black plastic d whistle that sounds far better than the Trad in the clip. This is interesting.
On my Dixon Aluminum Tunable, it also had the flatter-than-needed 7th. So much so that I took it back to check against other Dixon whistles that the store had. They were all exactly the same.
The soundclip on the OZ whistle site seems very different than the way my Dixon sounds. Mine is very sweet and soft. And since I bored out the c# with a Dremmel tool, (maybe the width of a human hair) it is perfectly in tune now too.
You may want to give Tony a shout to see if he could fix your whistle. He has a pretty good reputation as being very service oriented about the instruments he makes.
