Hey, im thinking about getting an m and e delrin d for my first flute. I have heard about the new model, but there is only one listed on the site. Whats the deal? Any info/comparisons about the two would be much appreciated. Thanks
P.S.- Would i be disappointed about the way my m and e would sound compared to say matt molloys flute in recording (Im not saying playing style or etc but tone?)
The site has not been updated for the new R&R model. You just have to ask for it in your correspondence with Michael Cronelly. I have one, and while i’m a beginner, much more experienced players have tried it and been impressed.
My personal, uninformed opinion… I love it. It’s easy to play (within your abilities of course), easy to maintain, it went camping this weekend, and if you get the metal joint rings, looks like a “real” wooden flute.
Regards,
John

The answer is yes, you’ll be disappointed in the tone, but no, it won’t be the flute’s fault… I’m just now after some months starting to get decent tone out of my low-end Ralph Sweet and my Hall Crystal. Unless you already play an embouchured instrument (non-fipple end blown flutes, fifes, piccollos, I dunno what else - not a lot… ) it’s going to be a while before you can get out of the flute what the flute is capable of. The annoying thing is that I’m told I’m a -fast- learner on the flute, and my tone and breathing are still, to my ear anyway, very sad indeed…
On the other hand, you -can’t- have an Olwell for two years or so, so I’d suggest you do what I’m doing (and what others have done) … get the M&E (I’m going to get a Seery, personally, because I think it’s got more of what I want in a flute) and figure out which of the great makers you want a flute from, and get into the waiting list…
(Of course, which high end maker to go with is a much harder decision than M&E vs. Seery, and one which I haven’t made yet.)
This is all said without having -played- an M&E, mind, but on the other hand, I’m parroting advice given on this selfsame board so I hope not to be contradicted too violently. ![]()

Thanks for the replies- i was pretty much decided on a MandE, but i have heard good things about seery. I have also read a comparison online, but i was wondering what brand you guys thought would be better for a beginning flute player. Also, i would love to hear some Pros and cons etc? Thanks again.

This is the most recent topic where people actually expressed an opinion on the m&e vs. seery debate (or, rather, the most recent topic where it was in the title… I seem to recall something more recent but I dunno where):
Thanks again- but, i just noticed that Michael makes flutes out of blackwood for not too much more money. Has anyone played one of these? Is it relatively easy to play like the delrin one? Is the sound quality worth the extra money compared to the plastic? Thanks once again, William
