Slugger’s earlier post with that clip caught my attention, and I had been learning the tune from Liam O’ Flynn’s The Fine Art of Piping CD not long before its availability.

Fine stuff, and a great tune, with many more of the same quality on that CD. There is something about the recording method of the CD, that with its contents, is worth a serious visit.

Nice clips of younger Paddy Keenan and Ronan Browne. Thanks for posting that.

Not to mention Tommy Kearney. Thanks for posting it Pat.

And everybody else too, Junior, Nora Cleary, Tom Lenihan etc etc so many now dead and gone. Great how loose they play it with the locations too, Ennistymon, Miltown, Liscannor , Quilty and Doolin all flow into one.
I was sitting beside the camera at the Tommy Kearney recital, a different century.

Tommy Kearney was my wery first tutor back in 1977 in Waterford - just a few nights, but enough to make me stay in piping ! I met him last time in 1979 in his home in Donmore East. What a day - i will newer forget it!
I went to Miltown in 1978 and 1979. Then i had a break, but have been back since 2095 - and is going again!

happy piping!

MIles and Miles of Music - Seamus Ennis - 1975

Thanks for that Pat, I spotted it this morning and downloaded it. Shame it’s not such a great copy.

Am I wrong to think this is an edited version? I saw the video of this docu during the mid eighties and recorded the sound track of it. I learned one of the tunes Ennis played towards the end, Castles in the Air, which is missing from this copy

At the time it was rumoured that Eamonn de B. had, for some reason, put a gagging order on the film and would sue anybody who showed it. True or not, it wasn’t until it was broadcast on CWatR that it was seen in public. Lovely job and when I first saw it I was happy to see EdeB clearly showed his background in nature films when he put the soundtrack together.

This is the only version I’ve seen. There is another documentary that starts with Ennis opening the Lisdoonvarna festival. Maybe that’s the one you’re thinking of?

Glad it is being seen again!

Patrick

No, positively Miles and Miles of Music. Maybe they edited it a bit to fit the CWatR time slot.
