The best High D...

In your opinion, which’s the best high D?

Mainly to play professional live and in studio. No sessions or busking. I have my feadog for that.

(I’d like it hard blowing and narrow bored…)

Thank you in advance,
Gio

Doc Jones has “the best whistle in the world” for sale. I wouldn’t argue with him. The Thin Weasel (what he’s selling) meets all your needs except for narrow bore. It thrives on being played hard and rewards you with a full sound, a little chiff, a little sweetness. If narrow bore is more important than hard blowing, you may want to consider a Grinter. If hard blowing is most important, one of the aluminum whistles such as Overton or Harper would fit the bill.

Right now, in our household, it is between the O’Riordan (Renee calls it ‘Oreo’) and our Blackwood Thin Weasel (she calls it ‘oops’ because that is what it says near a ding inside its case.

I like both REALLY a lot and so does she and got lambasted recently for trying to sell Oops. I thought there was only enough room for ONE really great whistle. My bad.

Since you did not mention price or any other qualities I will mention a couple of other contenders that are a little more attainable and less pricey ($100 to $125).

Weston - I have one of his in Sapele. It sounds surprisingly like Oreo. No kidding. Just a bit more breathy and not tunable.

Syn Lancewood - Very sleek looking instrument, classy. I grab for it frequently when playing along with Renee since it is tunable. Again, just a little more complex than Oreo, similar to the Thin Weasel.

Can you tell we really like wooden instruments.

The best whistle, without a doubt in the world, is the Cooperman.

Seriously, I love my Elfsong, the Water Weasel I had a chance to play (though I found the matching C and Eb tubes strangely less than stellar), and my narrow bore Hoover. I also like my Gens a whole lot.

Thanks guys!!
I will surely look for the whistles you mentioned

I just realized I made a big mistake probably caused by hurry… I would mean WIDE bore and not narrow!
I think ( true  ) it allows me to easely do half covering technique in order to play in differents and/or inusuals keys or even cromatic phrasings… (not jazz stuff… although I’d like to)

I’d have to agree with Chas.

If you want power and expression (big holes, big bore) I’d go with a thin weasel

or an Overton.

Copelands are also plenty powerful and have a nice flutely sound. They have smallish holes though compared to the other two.

Doc

There is a Burke Brass, Overton (Goldie), and Copeland on ebay right now…

Thanks Doc!

I’m impressed by the huge number of whistlemakers around… :astonished:
I’m on this forum since a couple of weeks and until that, my range of known brands/makers was Generation, Feadog, Waltons, Hardy’s, Overtone and Dixon… :tomato:

I’ll probably look for a Thin Weasel as it really seems to be the best whistle on earth! It does fit all my needs and… I’ve always dreamt a wooden whistle! But a new one… for different things including the fact that I live in Italy and we’ll probaly meet some problems with shipping.

But what about Burke’s?? I remember I once played what I after realized was a Burke’s and the only thing I can remember (imagine the situation.. :pint: ) was that was so HEAVY!

Burkes are fine whistles, and the wide-bores especially so. But if you want a hard blower, the Burke is probably not what you’re looking for. You can generally move quite a bit of air through them, but they just can’t be pushed the way Weasels can.

If you have the funds, I still think you should buy Doc’s whistle. (It’s one of a kind, too.) If not, get a Water Weasel. The only differences between Glenn’s plastic and wooden D’s are the subtleties. But, if you really want the best whistle with your criteria, I think you’ll appreciate the difference.

The best one i have is the Humphrey (Raindog).

Same here… but it’s not “hard blowing.”

I think an Overton fits your description.

chas, I think I’ll wait some years to allow me whistles like that… I’m on my 5th year playing and although I consider myself a fairly good whistler I just want to enjoy it more if you know what I mean… It’s like a set of pipes from Froment, Woff, Rogge, O’Brian… The pipes/whistles of your life!

Overtons would be a good solution… let’s try them and… it’s never too late to buy a Thin Weasel.
