Technique Request - Ennis Pure Drop

Does anybody know how to ornament the opening phrase of The Pure Drop in the manner of Seamus Ennis? For some reason, his technique in the first bar has always eluded me.

Thx, Eric

I take it that you are talking about the Ennis inverted cran type thing.

The notes I play to get that effect are:

DFDGDAD.

I thinks its best thought of as a tight triplet FGA movement played off the knee. Practicing it as such (as the tight triplet, on the knee) and then playing it off the knee from the open D and back to D seems to do the trick.

Regards,

Harry.

Thanks Harry. I will try it when the daylight comes (4:14 in the am now) and report back.

Eric

Hello

Another Ennis cran is the GFA cran. Treat it the exact same way as Harry describes, practicing the GFA as a tight triplet and then playing it off the knee.

Inverted cran. Hmmmm. That’s how I do most of my cranning (ascending notes like that). Should this best be reserved for special occassions?, because it is my bread-n-butter style of cran.

I’ve just listened very closely to what Mr. E was at there. He’s doing different things (as usual), but I would put his standard approach to that cran as:

DF(D)AD

where the D in commas is a very fleeting grace note that gives it that nice gurgly tone.

I suppose the way to practice it tight and on the knee would be to practice playing a short, tight F sharp followed by a tight and plosive A, then do it off the knee. Same as I suggested above but minus the G element.

Regards,

Harry.
