hello,
I’m intending to order a set from a non-EU maker. Anyone has experience with the importing of a set of UP? If I have to pay taxes on the instrument, it would be an extra cost.
If I’d go and collect the set personally and return to Europe with the instrument, without telling anything to customs
, what would happen?
Hopefully, someone has gone through this before…
regards
The US Customs state “The United States does not have a VAT or other federal tax on goods and services. Many travelers to the United States mistake state taxes for VAT, and wrongly assume they can be refunded. There is no refund for taxes on goods and services purchased in the United States.” Therefore, to avoid paying taxes you would have to have the instrument shipped directly to your house. Unless, of course, you buy in Oregon or some state that doesn’t have any VAT of sales tax! I have had a instrument shipped from England to France one day (before the Schegen stuff) and I never paid taxes on it, although I understand that in theory I should have… Unless your country’s customs are very picky, you should be able to make your purchase tax-free because US businesses do not charge any tax if the item is shipped into a country or state they don’t have any facility in. If you walk into Europe with your instrument purchased in the US, it’s already yours, it’s a personal item and I don’t think they can tax it, especially since they can’t prove that you didn’t have it with you when you left.

I am in the same situation. Have ordered a set from S. Gallagher and since I don’t want to pay about 30% in taxes shipping it to Sweden I will go to New York next year to collect the pipes myself.
Cheaper and I will have a week in NY as well…
