Synth dronereeds + chanter stopvalve drawings, have a look

www.songsea.com , don’t know if there alllready mention about these in this forum, but anybody tried to make these…comments

Yes. They work very well though they are a little on the quiet side. I suppose that experimenting with the thickness of the tongues may remedy this. Very easy to assemble, materials are easy to find.

As Mr. Smith said, they work as advertised. including the cost of the plans, you can make several sets for under $20, although with a little experimentation, you shouldn’t need more than 1 set anyway. I’m loving mine. One thing, I highly recommend using some type of “epoxy putty” (easily found in hardware stores) wherever the plans call for hot glue. Makes for much sturdier construction.

Agreed, it will also make the tone bolder.

Is there a difference in volume? I’ve been told that the only difference is the durability of synth reeds when they’re not played. The fact that they’re quieter is very interesting. I’ve a loud Thompson chanter. I’m awaiting delivery of Whitmer drones. I’d considered getting synth drone reeds as I have enough problems with the chanter reed, but if they’re going to be quiet, I think I’ll stick with the cane.

It varies from one style of synth reed to another, plus the materials used. The composite drone reeds I have from David Boisvert are bold and bright in addition to being a perfect volume. The composite drone reeds I have made are not as loud, but both are rock steady when it comes to stability. Both will play in tune and spot on, even after sitting for a long while in the pipes. These are just two of the many examples out there.

I guess one may want to test various synthetic drone reeds to hear what suits them best.

here is a chanter stop valve i made and posted on another thread, but it seems to apply here, too…

STOP THE INSANITY!
