This morning I was giving an 8th student a flute lesson when she noticed a few whistles on my desk. She asked what they were and why I had so many. I explained that they are all a bit different, having different keys and tone, etc. She seemed very interested, being a flute player and all, so I gave her my Sweetone D and a fingering chart. You would of thought I gave her a million dollars. Now, the rest of the faculty at my school are wondering why this girl is walking around the halls playing the whistle. I not sure what I have started, but it made me feel good to give an interested youngster a whistle. I ordered a few more Sweetones from the whistle shop to hand out to my other private students. Maybe we’ll end up with a whistle ensemble at my school.
It certainly makes more sense to me than having 4th and 5th graders playing the recorder (or trying to). The whistle is in my opinion, a more forgiving instrument than a recorder. The Sweetone is a great whistle for beginners and other players who have not yet developed a serious case of WhOA.
Um…isn’t there a law or something about passing addictive musical instruments to minors? ![]()
On the other hand, the thought of a student whistle ensemble sounds awesome… at least after the learning squeeks go away. Hm… maybe I could interest my kid’s Cub Scout pack…
