Because here in the province of Quebec at least we’re paying much, much more.
I went camping and had to fill a rented car’s tank. I paid 1.36$/litre for gas. Let’s assume CND and US money is even. One gallon = 3.78 litres. That would make the price of a gallon US$5.14.
I just looked and it seems the average price of a gallon of gas in the US is about 4$.
If you ever come here, you’ll pay a 30% premium.
Still complaining???
Edit: some financial experts say that the canadian dollar will get back to 1.30$ for a US dollar within a year or two, which would even out the prices…
Yeah, Az, I’m not sure why the media seem to be stuck on the $4/gallon figure. Here the average is $4.52 today, and closer to $4.70 in my area. Taxes might account for the difference.
$4.01-$4.35 range at the gas pump here in Utah, but we were just hit with a 25% natural gas increase (home heating, stoves, etc.), with another of the same amount scheduled in October. When I go to the grocery store, prices on items I buy regularly have increased each time recently–and not small amounts either. We’re getting hit pretty hard from every direction right now–it’s not just gas for the car.
I try not to complain. I just hope it will scare the sh*t out of a lot of people and they’ll start living more within their means and more intelligently. I do feel sorry for older folks on limited/fixed incomes.
It’s an eye-opener to go from the US to the UK.
As I recall, it was costing the equivalent of around $60 or $70 US to fill the tank of the tiny car we hired, and that was in 2004. I think petrol was the equivalent of around 7 US dollars a gallon. Is that right? It’s probably more now.
Anyhow here in California gas has been around $4.70 a gallon.
Last summer I didn’t hire a car at all but used public transportation for my two weeks in Glasgow, which has an excellent underground and bus system.
Not nearly as much as the last iteration of congress has wasted in earmarks, othewise known as pork-barrel spending, or as buying the votes of the ignorant. Why would you expect your boys to act more intelligently now? They never have in their entire history, and aren’t likely to now. Since pelosi’s bunch has been in power, the price of gas has gone up from slightly over 2.00 per gallon to over 4.50, depending on the state taxes. Of course, that has apparently been their intention since infesting congress in 2006.
Besides, the money in Iraq isn’t wasted. We found 500 tons of yellowcake, which is weapons-grade uranium, in Iraq. It is now in Canada being further refined. Of course, that was 500 tons that the democrats said didn’t exist.
Actually, yellowcake uranium is not weapons-grade uranium, but is one step in processing uranium ore. Yellowcake uranium isn’t even suitable for nuclear reactor fuel rods without further processing.
So, yeah, I still consider that money pretty much thrown down a black hole. All our war in Iraq has gained us is a hell of a lot of dead Americans, dead Iraqis, and a steadily degrading international reputation.
All the pork in U.S. history combined wouldn’t even compare to the cost of this needles, misguided, EXPENSIVE war.
And “expensive” in terms of so much more than money. You can slowly build back some money–but you can’t replace so much as one lost life.
And here in Oz the price is fluctuating between $1.60 and $1.80 a litre at present which means it costs me around $60 when I fill up with petrol each week (I travel 400k home to office and back).
I know this is unsustainable but the Government’s efforts to decentralise about 20 years ago didn’t really work and the dream of telecommuting isn’t really possible on a 50 kbps dial up connection.
The latest scary headline is “Petrol to reach $8 / litre by 2018”… I may get a lpg conversion next year if I can afford it.
