Signed on to the forum last night for the first time. I am a lone musician without a mentor. I play harp and hammered dulcimer and want to add the whistle. I bought a Susato in D. I work with it but I am finding it takes so little breath I readily over blow the lower register. I am finding fingering pretty intuitive thus far, albeit that may be the thoughts of a novice. I need a primer on breath control. Suggestions?

… probably not a primer, just practice. Try not to play the whistle as loudly as possible, but as quietly as possible, whilst staying in tune … you’ll soon get the hang of it ![]()
Play a pennywhistle quietly?!?!?!?!?!
Sacrilege!

This site has some exercises for breath control;

Nice site, just went over it, plan to use them in my warm up.
I love the fact is said you would squick the high notes since at the start thats all I could do and I told my sister I was so happy. This is an actually rendition of a conversation we had, “and would go squick, I got it, squick, yay I got it, squick, squick. Then I the next day I tried and did squick the next note.”

The high Susatos come in two bore sizes: small and very small. The very small will take a little less air than the small. If you’re playing on a very small bore maybe try switching to the small bore. Some whistles are very sensitive to blowing pressure while some allow you play much more forcefully.
