i finally decided to go for flat pitch (B nat), not that I dislike CP but I just fell in love with B pipes So I sold my PS (blackwood, silber plated etc) in concert pitch.
My piping experience is rather small, i started about 8 month ago but unfortunatetly I did not play almost whole summer long for several reasons. But I already know some tunes and some gracenotes etc.
Now that i´m pipeless (feels terrible ) I wonder what to get next. As I said I decided to go for B pipes, but I´m not sure wheter to get a D chanter too.
So my question is: Would you suggest me to have a D one as well? (I mean the tutor books and the sound samples on the CD are all played in concert pitch, the piping workshops go with CP as well) Or do you think there is no need to have one and I could handle all the learning on a B one.
I´m also not sure which B chanter to get: Andreas Rogge is quite near me but I just could afford a B practice Set of him within my budget but if I would go for example for Richard Patkos B pipes, I would get a Halfset for the same money…
The only reason why you would need a D chanter is if you play with other musicians and they can’t (or won’t) play in B. Otherwise, you can buy software that will change the pitch of sound samples - the software is much cheaper than a 2nd chanter. There’s nothing to stop you from participating in a workshop with a B chanter. You’ll learn just as much with a B chanter as with a D chanter.
Rogge’s B chanters are very nice and will certainly hold their value. I’ve not heard any of Patkos’s pipes so I can’t comment. Listen to both and try decide which sound you prefer - if you prefer the Rogge, you’ll have to decide whether you think it’s worth the extra money. In the end it’s down to you.
B is the business. Rogge’s B sets are really nice, you can’t go wrong with one of those. I think it would be handy to have a D chanter as well. One option would be to take one of Herr Rogge’s make your own practice set classes. You’d end up with an inexpensive D stick that way. Another method would be to look at getting something like one of David Daye’s PVC chanters. Not too hard to make and they aren’t that expensive. I’m considering making one of them in C in order to have a C chanter. Good luck!
I have a Childress full set D.. I was wondering if I got a B or C chanter would the D drones tune down to the B or C chanter.. Sure would be nice if that would work?
Theres an easy way to find oot.. Extend yer drones and see whit happens.
Ye won’t get B ye might get C# but I think ye will be lucky to get a good balance with any old chanter.

As Uilliam says, you might be able to go down a semi-tone to C# without much difficulty but your problems will be trying to get your drones balanced with your chanter.
