What, roughly, are standard tempos for jigs, for reels, for hornpipes?
I mean beats per minute on a metronome. By ‘standard’ I mean
acceptable in a reasonably fast session. Thanks
My teacher played for the dance so I tend to play a bit slower. If you can get hold of a copy of John Doonan “Flute for the Feis” it’s well worth a listen as a starting point. PM if you have problems finding it.

Flute for the Feis is one thing. if you play for sets, it’s quite a different one. Just saying, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
True, and sessions are another way of skinning the same cat
. However listening to music played for a specific purpose (and there’s some superb music for sets out there) is a good way of getting the feel for pace and rhythm and the nuances between jigs, reels etc.
