I love this album by Joanie Madden. I love the fact that there is no singing on it but just lovely arrangements of the songs.
Can you recommend any other albums that I can buy that are similar please.

I just bought Tina McLoughlin - Just for now. That is a bit of a mixture. Not quite what I was looking for but a couple of nice ones.
That can be such a problem with albums. You don’t know what you are buying untill you get it home and listen and then you can end up feeling that you have wasted your money

Joanie madden’s solo CD’s are required listening, IMHO. Each of the CD’s by Cherish the Ladies feature great whistle playing from Joanie as well. Further required listening includes Feadoga Stain I & II by Mary Bergin. One could spend a lifetime listening to and learning from these CD’s. Better yet find a workshop where either Mary or Joanie are teaching.

It’s worth pointing out that Song of the Irish Whistle is nothing at all like Joanie’s other albums or the Cherish the Ladies recordings; Song of the Irish Whistle is in the genre of Space Music.

Curious that you should mention HOS. Quite a few years back now, I was laying in an intensive care ward paralyzed from the neck down. I had a small transistor radio with me. The radio would only pick up one station, a public radio station. In the middle of my first night there Hearts of Space was being broadcast. I was familiar with the show having listened to it during many late night sessions at work. That night, however, I experienced a rather cathartic moment when through my ear-buds came one of the most emotionally charged pieces of music I had ever heard. At its conclusion, the host announced that it was Joanie Madden playing Marcus Hernon’s Air from her brand new release Whistle on the Wind from Hearts of Space records.

Well, it’s a long, boring story. Here’s the short version. The paralysis was sort of a blessing in disguise, I think. I recovered from the neurological problem (well, 95%) but I had lost all my “muscle memory”. So tasks that were familiar to me prior to my little disease episode had to be relearned. You know, common things like walking and so on. I played many musical instruments before that. It took a lot of time to re-acquire any facility on an instrument. The fiddle stymied me completely. It was like starting from square one all over, twenty plus years of playing down the drain. I never have gotten back my feel for that instrument. So I set the fiddle aside and I turned my attention to the whistle which had been a secondary instrument to me before. It’s my primary instrument now. And that was mostly because of hearing Joanie Madden playing Marcus Hernon’s Air that evening on HOS.

It was a relatively rare autoimmune disease. Let’s stay away from the long, boring stuff. Anyway, Joanie’s CD’s are great stuff, regardless of whether she’s playing New Age style music or ITM. She’s great fun as a teacher tool, if you get the opportunity. And CTL are great in concert too. Can you tell? I’m a fan!
It’s a shame that you can’t hear HOS unless you buy a subscription. It’s broadcast on many public radio stations here in the US. Very mellow! Another program that features “ambient” or “space” music is “Echoes”. If you didn’t find the voice of the host of Hearts of Space appealing then John Diliberto the host of Echoes will drive you nuts too.
